One Pound Propane Cylinders Cold Temps - MR. Heater
« on: Jan 12, 2013, 08:59 AM »
Silly question I know but will storing the propane cylinders outside in very cold temps effect how they work? I ran into trouble years ago with a portable grill not working with a one pound cylinder that was outside in single digit temps over night. I assume the Mr. Heater will work just fine with propane cylinders that are really cold?

Thank you very much!!

They work much better if the tank is warm...

OK thank you. Would a larger tank work better if it was cold (for example an 11 pounder) or would it be best to keep that warm as well.

THanks!!

1 pounders do work better the warmer they are, bigger tanks are fine out in the cold, even in the shack once my 1 pounders get down below half they dont put out near the heat unless you shacke them or swap them out to warm up.....

Does not matter. The 1lber will get colder when using it than it ever would just sitting in your garage. They will turn to icicles when using in below 32º temps.

Thanks so much for the input. It sounds like I would be better off with a larger tank as they will work better in the cold - correct?

Would a ten pounder stay warm enough or should I go with a 20?

Thanks again, this is all new to me!

You get the refrigeration effect of forcing the propane though a small hole...

1lb tanks love to freeze up on buddy heaters when you run them on high, no matter what you do. I used to just swap them when they froze... pain in my butt...

I use 5lb tanks with a tank top sunflower now. 5lb tanks are handy as heck and they only charge me $2.66 at the co-op to fill them.

I have a 5# and it freezes when left out of fish house... Heater will be faint then go out. thought about keeping it in sled not sure if ok... I always vent well though. I guess it is no different then having it on a sunflower in house.

I see they now sell 1 lb'er "socks" to keep them warm...as soon as the propane starts vaporizing, the cans get cold, regardless, this will just keep them colder once that starts, IMO.  Umm, isn't that how "can coolies" work, anyway?? ::)

If you let those one pounders get to cold they will not work at all in your buddy heater. I have had to put a bottle inside my clothes to warm it up and get it to work.

Yesterday I had to stuff a cold 1lber in my coat because it wouldn't light when cold.  I think I'm going to get the hose kit and use a 11lb or 20lb tank.

I use the 10 pound tank. I use it in my clam flip over and I set it on a 12X12 1 inch thick piece of foam insulation, The shiny stuff and have never had any problems. Have used both my buddy with a hose and a sunflower on top.  Had 1 pounders frost up and quit often and just gave up. 10 pounders are pretty pricey and you hardly ever see one used for sale. I wish I had a 5 pounder but my 10 works fine. My wife found a short "squatty" one at a yard sale and that is my favorite. Pretty hard to tip over and easy to store.  Steve

You keep tank in sled then or out on ice?
