Title: Southwest Iowa; places to try this winter
Post by: bert29 on Dec 05, 2013, 10:48 PM
Well, now that we are getting that deep freeze we've been waiting for, here are some locations in SW Iowa that might be worth a trip out on the ice to try this winter: Here are some that I'm looking forward to fishing through the ice this season (with a brief description of location and possible fishing quality report) Feel free to add to this list for those of you who fish in SW Iowa!

Mile Hill Lake, Mills County (2 miles west of Glenwood) small lake of about 14 acres...has some decent bluegills and nice crappies, along with solid population of largemouth bass and catfish.very clear lake (max depth of about 30ft) and good structure. easy access, but does have several springs (which can cause weak spots.

Pony Creek Lake, Mills County (5 miles NW of Glenwood)..larger lake of about 80 acres...long, narrow lake, with quite a bit of depth in the 20ft range..best fishing is in the middle to upper (north end) end of lake. decent access on east side of lake (most of west side of lake is private property)..okay gills (most in 6-7" range, with a few in 8-9", good crappies, with some nice fish in 12" range..nice largemouth bass population, along with many yellow bass. water quality is decent with visibility 2-3ft. not as much structure so movement is the key to stay on fish

Fulsom Lake (7 miles NW of Glenwood off of I-29 near rest stop. borrow pit of about 45 acres..decent access near rest stop..this lake was real good about 3 years ago, but has since tapered off due to dying off of weed and disappearance of wood structure. Okay bluegill population with some large fish in 9" range, along with some really nice crappies in 12-13" range, but hard to locate due to the limited structure. a lot of rough fish (gar, shad, carp--and now even the dreaded silver carp (those crazy jumping carp) that came out of the Missouri during flood a couple of years ago). With right spot and early or late in year, fishing here can be surprisingly good, but also erratic. Big Bass and huge catfish roam this lake!

Lake Manawa..Council Bluffs..large state-run lake that has nice population of crappies, wipers, catfish, with some walleyes, bluegills and a lot of yellow bass. Shallow with some structure, but again, unless you know where to fish on this lake, it's tough. I've seen (and also caught) some real nice crappies, wipers and walleyes through the ice, but you'll have to work at it. If you like a challenge, good lake to try.

Viking Lake, Montgomery County...about 4 miles east of Stanton and about 130 acre lake. Recently renovated, and this lake of all these, is the "hot-spot" to try this winter. A deep lake with max depth in 45ft range, with a lot of new DNR structure and excellent populations of bluegills, nice crappies in 8-11" range, and superb population of catfish, along with a nice population of walleyes. Takes a little longer to freeze, but once it has good ice, this lake might be the place to be.

I-29 borrow pits in Mills, and Fremont counties. several "borrow" pits exist along I-29 that can hold some great bluegill, crappie, and bass fishing--with several other species (like walleyes, saugers, northerns, white bass, yellow bass, blue catfish) that were trapped in these pits after the flood back in 2011 of Missouri river. Many of these pits might be a waste of time, but you also might find that one that is underfished and loaded with crappies--some up to 16"!!
This is just a short list of some possible areas I'm looking forward to fishing this winter--along with the countless farm ponds in Mills and Fremont Counties!
if you are interested in trying some of these areas, give me a shout (PMessage). I'm loving this single-digit overnight lows for the next several days! Hard ice, baby!

Great Post.  I have tried Mile hill, Pony Creek , and Manawa and you spot on on all 3 of them.  I have wanted to try the Pit just to the south of race track but it is a long walk from the gravel road and I do not want to do an interstate stop and drop.

You talking about those "PJ" pits Larry?
I've never fished them. I've only been in Glenwood area now for 10 years (teach and coach) but I know guys I fish with that used to fish them long time ago....I can't give you any info on those.
Another area I thought about that is somewhat off radar is over by Hwy 34/71..Hacklebarney (county run area)  two small lakes/ponds that in the past have had some huge gills and crappies. Not sure what low water did the past 2 seasons, but did know that the DNR guys out of cold springs area said there were some huge (read 2lb crappies!) that came out of there 2 winters ago. I've never fished them either but I'd be curious to know if anyone has fished it either thru ice or open water of late.
I'm hoping to get out this sunday either to Mile Hill or Pony if we don't get too much snow from this projected storm.

you mean ice? Yes, some ice..not sure how much, but judging some area ponds near hwy 34 I drive by into town in the morning toward school-yes, good and frozen over. I haven't been out to Pony Creek so I can't report on that. Mile Hill was frozen over and kept its ice before this deep freeze..0 degrees here in Glenwood right now with low expected down to -3 with light wind..excellent ice making weather!
fulsom had ice on it as did some ponds along hwy 34 as I drove to Creston today for basketball game

Manawa varied from 4"-6" in three different spots I checked today at 3pm. Saw plenty of holes drilled and iced over already.

yeah, manawa is had a couple open spots yesterday, but they completly locked up overnight. Found a minimum of 4" also, unfortunatly the fish haven't been cooperative.

Fished Arrowhead Lake in Neola this summer and caught a lot of good 8-10" gills and a couple good crappie.  I talked to the park officer yesterday and he said the ice should be good to go by next weekend.

Ice should be good to go at arrowhead, fished it last week already. To be fair, I haven't been out the since last sun, but there was 4"+ then and the lake is really sheltered so the warm weather would have had minimal impact. Also arrowhead is FULL of big yellowbass, last year we caught over 40 the one day with the smallest being 9".

Was on Pony Creek yesterday. North end has 5" or better. Hot bite till noon. Lots of small gills, crappie and yellow bass. Occasional keeper fish.

was on pony creek today...5+ inches of hard clear ice...north end as well. caught a few nice crappies and other guy I was with (he had been there earlier than me about hour or so) had a nice mess of decent 9-10 inch crappies. I caught one 12" crappie (few smaller ones) 2-3 decent bluegill, 2 bass (1 12") and lost a nice one at hole.

Hey guys.  I'm originally from Glenwood and now live in Omaha.  Bert's summary of the area lakes were spot on.  I thought those PJ lakes were private.  Well, atleast the pond on the south end of the railroad tracks.  I've actually put one of those two man bass raider boats on the race track pond for open water and we caught large crappies and bass.  I would assume the bluegill population would be strong because there is quite a bit of vegetation around the edges.  When the track flooded a couple years ago there were fish up in the lookout towers on the track.  I would assume there might be some river rough fish in there now.  Another place that I've had pretty good luck on the ice was Pinky's Glenn lake just on the west side of Tabor.  I caught quite a few very large bluegills out there last year.  Quite a bit of flooded timber that is near the ramp area as well as two coves further toward the east and south that have flooded timber as well.  I would assume there is a good population of crappies in there as well due to the cover and the depths in that lake go into the 30ft area.  I would never use that lake for open water because the boat ramp sucks but it's pretty good for ice fishing.

I forgot to add that I'm almost always down in the Glenwood area if anyone wants to go out with me on the ice.  There are a few other places that I have permission to use as well.  I'm usually on the ice in Omaha during the week and back in the Glenwood area on the weekends.  I'm tempted to buy an Aqua Vu this week but kind of skeptical how well it'll work because the water clarity in SW Iowa isn't always the clearest stuff!  We'll see how it goes.

Did pretty good at pony creek today. Lots of 8-9" gills. Lost a big 'ol crappie at the hole.  Also lost a giant (at least 24", close to 8 lb.) bass at the hole. VERY frustrating! I have video of the bass coming up to the hole, but won't post it here due to foul language. If you really want to see it, it's on my Facebook. All in all, great first day on the ice! Thickness was a consistent, solid 6+" on the north end. I will be back on Sunday.

Yes- It was very good before the flood, very bad after.  If you drill a big enough hole and bang on the ice, maybe you can get a silver carp to jump out!  It won't be open till after the 1st of the year.

got it...Know his mom/dad well (and his brother..and other roommate too!)
did okay on Sunday. a few crappies and small gills. Pony creek is hit and miss (like anywhere else actually) If you fish west side near the brush and channel (near the shelter area) you'll catch some fish now. Ice should be good in that area (5-7" thick)
have you fished any ponds south of Glenwood lately? like the big one near Tabor owned by bruce? not sure how that one freezes anymore. I haven't fished it for few years now through ice

4" was what I was on. The areas the geese were on is probably less. Be careful on the north side mid lake.

Mile Hills ice is sketchy. Barely 2 inches across the lake with many springs causing problems. We drilled several spots and deemed it not safe for our liking at this time yet. Hopefully the hard freeze will continue and make it happen.

fished a couple of ponds south of Glenwood today with Chris71383 and gohawks. we did very well on huge gills (some pushing 10 1/2" and nice crappies in 13-14" range--along with a bunch of bass in 12-15" range. I know these people don't read this on this site, but I am very thankful (and I do express that to them) that the land owners of these ponds allow us to fish on them! They can easily say no (and that's their right to do so!) but they graciously allow us (and many others too like yourselves that get permission to fish private waters) to fish. We here in Mills and Fremont Counties in SW Iowa are blessed with some amazing private ponds (too many to count!) and what a great Christmas gift---great ice, great fishing, great company with friends, and all because of generous land owners! Vics; still need to do some fishing with you as well!

Fished three different ponds this weekend. Ice was 4.5 - 6 inches on all of them.  Fished a pond Sunday that was the best, crappie between 11.5" and 13.5" and bluegill 8"-9.5" all day long.

This isn't right it's going to be nice out today and I'm stuck at work. What do you guys think these warmer temps are going to do to the ice?
Title: Re: Southwest Iowa; places to try this winter
Post by: Cotacatchers on Dec 17, 2013, 08:05 AM
Doubt this warm front will hurt much, most of the area lakes are capped pretty good , temps are supposed to fall by sunday , and it will help by melting the snow on top of the ice and refreeze.
drilled a hole on manawa late last night and found almost  10" near the sportsman club.

Had a great weekend fishin with Bert and Chris71383.  Thanks to the landowners for lettin us use their private ponds to catch some great bluegills and crappies.  I am in the process of gettin them a bottle of "thanks" :)  A sidenote...remember to ask permission to fish these private ponds.  We were on a buddy's place and there were a few people out on the ice that didn't have permission to be there when we first showed up.  It's this type of stuff that can put a bad taste in the landowner's mouths that can keep the rest of us from being able to get on the ice.  Take the time and just ask permission.  Most of the time the landowners are fine with it.  Also, a bottle of "thanks" or a 12pack can go a long way in keeping the relationship strong for another trip.  :)

Be careful out there that one 50 degree day messed it up quite a bit .  My favorite lakes are really messed down around Mt Ayr at least 2" of water on what once was 5" of good clear ice so I will bet there's some bad spots . It's going to take a week of cold weather to straighten things up . I'm hoping we don't get more than 2" of snow . Good Luck All and mostly be Safe out there !!!!!!!

Got out on county lake today ( sw) , awesome day with high temps and lots of ice had 10-11 inches
All fish were in the 15-20 foot range , nothing shallow ,,  bait was darters , jig and plastics ( glow head /glow body)
Caught yellows, gills , pumpkinseed , green sunnies , crappie , and largemouth
All fish were really tight to cover and as clouds moved in and wind picked up the bite slowed   Fished 9 am- 1:30
Released all fish.
 .  Merry Christmas Guys.

It will not affect.   If anything it will melt snow    Most area lakes have 8-14 " of ice.  Just stay away from white ice

The pits  by NE city bridge got inundated by flood water in "10" and did have a few sauger in them , But also got tons of shad and silver carp and all kinds of trash fish , tons of gar .   I'm sure a few still are in there but who wants to deal with Gar.?

Hit Viking Lake yesterday. Ice was solid 6". Fished off 2nd jetty west of the Restaurant and got skunked. My goal this year is to figure this lake out, I have had a lot of success at this lake during open water and can't seem to get anything going during the winter months.

Gohawks, you are right the sand pit pond south west of race track in pj is private. Use to be great for big crappie but thanks to flood it got tough.

I think he was talking about the 3 ponds right off of I29  The north 2 or private but the south one is owed by Iowa Conservation Commission (DNR).  I have fished it in the summer but there is no good way to get to it.  That sandpit more south and west does look like a good hole though...
Title: Re: Southwest Iowa; places to try this winter
Post by: gohawks on Jan 07, 2014, 02:47 PM
I figured the one to the south and west was private just by looking at Google Maps.  It looked like there was a gate to it.  LarryClutch was right...I was talking about the 3 sandpits right along the interstate.

The furthest south pit is owned by the DNR???  Unless you either pulled off the interstate and drug your gear down the hill or rode in by train on the tracks, that looks like a hassle to get to...not saying I wouldn't try if I knew it had fish and was public.  lol

I've fished the most northern of the 3 on open water before the flood when I had permission.  I'd like to fish it again just to see what the flood did to the quality of fish.

That said...this weekend looks real nice!  Almost t-shirt and a stocking hat type of weather compared the last couple weekends we've had.

I'll probably be down at the Percival interstate pit on Saturday.  It has been a ghost town pit for me so far this year.  A couple bass and that's about it through the hole.  That place really needs to have structure put in it.  Would love to be able to put some evergreens with cinder blocks on the ice.

Why waste time there? Pinkies has been good. Wouldn't the lake off highway 2 across from Nebraska city be a better choice. What about the lake south of the tracks. It never is fished. That's one I would like to try sometime.
Title: Re: Southwest Iowa; places to try this winter
Post by: gohawks on Jan 16, 2014, 09:49 AM
I've actually never been down to the lake off hwy 2 by Neb City.  I have a buddy that's been to the lake south of the tracks and said the flood screwed it up and got skunked on it.  Could have been a bad day too.  I'm not saying there might not be good fishin there by any means.  I'm not spending much time at Percival or the other lakes this weekend.  We'll be on private ice.  Last weekend was a little spooky with the private stuff we were on.  The ponds had a ton of springs in them so we'd be walking on 12 inches then have open water right next to us.  This wind could be a pain to the ice!

I would be down at Pinkies Saturday but I am installing a fish cleaning setup in my basement.  got an old Cast Iron sink. need to run pex and the drain.   Might try it Sunday early before it gets too warm.  Might also head down Tuesday Afternoon.  Let us know how you do if you are on Pinkies This weekend.  Also heard of some good catches on mile hill..

I am taking my oldest sons family out Saturday to a private lake that is public if you know what I mean. Two youngsters and my daughter in law who have never ice fished before. Hopefully I can put them on the gills there. Since I know the lake very well I think they will have a great time and will want to go again.

Larry:
can't speak for Pinky's Glen, but Mile Hill of late has been tough bite. Best bet I think is any of the number of farm ponds in area. You'll have much more consistent luck with fish--and size of fish--than Mile Hill. don't know about other spots in area, as I haven't been out too much of late. Did hear that Viking Lake near Stanton was starting to produce some nice crappies though.

After an hour of smaller gills we moved and found a bunch of these critters. We found out very quickly that they do not come out of a 6" hole. Had to double and triple drill holes to land them. We had a lot of fun for an hour or two until they moved off. I think we brought 10 of them on the ice and released them.

Dicks had nothing left out.  Scheels was slim pickins..  Did have 2 pro 4 augers.  Might be able to wheel and deal on 1 that was the display.  Not much for jigs.  Did have 2 tear drop 13 reels for $79.  No shacks but did have some otter sleds.  I did also notice reeds has marked a lot of their flashers down.  LX6 is going for $500 free shipping.
