I don't revel in the cost of fuel either, but I DO NEED SOME ICE. Besides, that white perch business is starting to sound like fun.  It's time - let it freeze.

Just got done splitting next year's firewood, rebuilt the canoe, cleaned the barn, trapped the field flooding beavers, I'm running out of projects.

Just watched a video on the weather channel app. Said that polar vortex is supposed to dip down our way in January. Said we’ll be burying augers by mid February and catching perch on ice till at least second week of April….. 😉

I’ve been reading about a SSW and polar vortex move for a few weeks. The weather channel shows 30s and 40s for the next 2 weeks…

In the meantime the boat is still in action.

Surprise fish today.

Yeah I agree. It’s all about the theatrics now days. That post was supposed to be a joke. Hate to say but I’d be more willing to bet this years ice season on Oneida is very similar to last years

First things first. Wishing everyone a happy New Year. This is my first post here since last winter.
I do have a serious question though about access to Big Bay at Keller rd.  After putting off going there for 30+  yrs, I made two trips there last year and enjoyed both.  I was there during the week and not really too many people were there and there were no problems and guys were pretty good about cleaning up .
But, I heard that access s closed this year?  If that is true, how can an old geezer like me get on the ice.  I only have a short ice fishing season this year. Getting another knee replacement February 6. I’d like to make the most out of a short window.

They still charge for parking Freddie. That ice, as you mentioned, can be sketchy. Even years prior to these warmer winter starts.

Is there still fishing access at Jewel.  There is no DEC fishing access sign on RT49 and I could not locate the access to the lake through the woods to the lake.  I see a gate with posted sign where I thought the access was.  ???

I swung in there today and there is a chain with a posted sign across the access. I have also noticed that the DEC access sign has been gone for a while.

When I look on On-x that land shows as government land. I am going to check with the DEC.

A hearty Happy New Year to you all.   Enjoying all the chat.  Too old to get on the ice so this is a second best.  We are nearly 1/2 way through our 5 winter months and far from any ice.  Does not look good with just 75 days before eye season closes. Cycles mess things up.  In 1965 my new bride and I checked our tip ups on New Years Eve at 10 pm.  It was 0 and had 18 to 20 inches of ice. Some of the Little Wonder tip up spools were frozen in.  Do any of you remember those tip ups ?

Hey guys I don’t post a ton here but I did contact Dec about big bay earlier in the year so I thought I’d share the email with all

“ Hi Matt,

I am not sure why OnX shows that location as being public access. I have gotten several other questions asking the same thing this fall. I know that people have used that spot to get on the ice in the past, but it has always been private property with no formal access. The DEC had no involvement such as an easement or other agreement. Either the property changed hands or the current owner no longer wants ice anglers crossing their property. Either way the landowner was entirely within their rights to put up the gate and restrict access.

The only DEC property on Big Bay is the Wildlife Management Area on the opposite shore from where you are talking about.

Let me know if you have further questions,

Scott”

Unfortunately looks like this will remain closed unless someone has a change of heart.

Thanks for all the replies.  I also heard that the access was town property so assumed it was. Who knows? Seems a shame. I doubt that the big bay marina will be as good. As you guys mentioned, the ice might not be good there. It also might be too much of a walk for me But, I might just take the drive anyway to check it out.
