Even if we get extreme cold, the ice that’s out there is still junk.

100% junk! It's the kind of ice you don't like to walk on when it's above freezing at all.

There is a cool down coming. Be interesting to see if the junk holds on for another month.

I wonder how many fish this weather has saved.  :-\

In a perfect world…a complete meltdown with some arctic cold for a week would give us good chance of seeing a month of good ice.

It’s been a strange winter!!!! If the perch are, where I hope they’ll be, at ice out, they don’t stand a chance!!🎣😈

I was out of Cleveland a few days ago and it was junk then spudded our way back weaving around cracks  and small heaves
5”of ice  spudded down 3” and watched it fill with water so it was time to get out of dodge 😉

When you target perch at ice out do you use live bait or jigs and lures? I’ve seen people use fat heads under floats but never tried it.

Remember fellas black ice at the end is not your friend ,be very cautious, I’ve stuffed my spud through 9” of that stuff , plus as the water warms from the streams and rivers it will melt at both ends

My buddy stuffed himself through 8".  Barely made it out alive.  Solid advice Fred.

I do pretty well with fatty's under a bobber but I fish really shallow water from shore on cloudy days too ..... I can see the perch most of the time and they seem to ignore everything else I throw but not those .....the ones I target seems to be following spawning suckers and eating their eggs .... if I hit it just right its like a feeding frenzy.....

Boats!?!? Yeah good luck with that. Next week or so is not looking good and I won’t touch that lake with a 10’ rod but I’m not giving up all hope. I think there is still a chance of walkable ice the first 2 weeks of March. It’s worst case scenario not safe to icefish but not safe to boat fish either lol. Should make for a good May either way I guess

Very safe on some bodies of water

Nice perch 👍👍. Glad you guys are getting out. Guess I just assumed you meant on oneida. I been getting pics from a buddy who’s getting into some hogs on one of the finger lakes by boat

I'm ready to roll as soon as one of the ramps on oneida is ice free. I've been out with icebergs more than once.

Lol whatever turns you on man. I’m really hoping the ice sticks around a little longer but if it goes good luck out there. I’m sure the fishing is awesome at ice out

That’s too bad. Wonder if the cold next week will stiffen it up enough or if it’s just so rotten that it won’t be good for walking for the rest of the season. Appreciate the update. Maybe get out on the kayak open water this weekend.

Probably be better for it to go and then maybe we get a chance to get on it again if we get an extended cold blasts. Thanks for all the updates Oneida1. Tight lines.

If that mid lake ice goes out I can’t see anyone getting on much of the lake again this year. Maybe the East and West ends. The chances of another stretch of 2 nights around zero and no wind or snow are slim.

So I would rather see it hang on and get what I can out of it than pray for another super cold snap…

Or clear it out and I’ll get the boat out. It looks like March could be cooler. It would suck to not be able to get on the ice or get the boat in! That happened in  March of 2017. It got warm at the end of February but the junk ice hung on through March.

I can not believe my eyes, looks like someone on the Sylvan Beach web cam. With the recent reports of ice rescues on Oneida I would not expect anyone to be testing fate by venturing out onto the lake. Even with a float suit, once the honey comb ice breaks it is unlikely you can get out on your own. Sure hope there are no more reports of ice rescues on Oneida.

Friend said airboats headed out for another one.
Really Hope it’s rescue verses recovery like Champlain had recently
