Probably both. Usually comes as a package. Although I can’t say I blame him much at this point

As I’m sure you know it’s a weird body of water. I fished 21 fow New Year’s Eve on 7” of good ice in north bay and as of Monday you couldn’t get 80 yards from shore. Who knows they could be on a foot of shelf ice. I’m heading north Saturday… I think Sunday I’ll do some poking around on oneida see what I can find. Either way next weekend is looking a lot more favorable………..finally

Sheesh, I do enjoy ice fishing and get antsy about getting out, but I can wait another week or so.  It should lock right up after today and then the weather looks real good for next week to build ice.

.  Whatever you get i’d suggest it has reverse and if possible, electric start.   The reverse will save you back from lugging off the trailer, getting unstuck, and missing a trail and having to back up.

I concur on the electric start and reverse as I have neither.
Get a long track like a Skidoo Tundra if you can find one.
Fan cool is best as many times there is no snow on the ice.
Carbides for skis for better control on bare ice.
The tug is the drug.

I'm newer to ice fishing, probably 6-7 years now, and I walk.  But how often are people with ATVs regretting not having a sled out there?  Based on my experience, I don't really remember many days where I didn't see ATVs out there.  I'd love to have one of each, but that's a lot of coin to justify for occasional use.  I could get into snowmobile trail riding, but I have too many hobbies as it is to add one more timesuck.

Honestly I’ve been walking since I started in 1994 and most of the time am fine with it.  Oneida is one lake where some areas are a mile walk so I avoid those hotspots and have found enough within 1/2- 3/4 mile walk to not jump on buying/ storing a sled for 2 months of use. I definitely recommend building a smitty sled that I just built last year, game changer for walkers unless snow is over 8” deep.
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

At 66 I do a lot of walking , but when the snow and slush monster shows up I take my  old tundra out , reverse is an absolute plus ,but  no electric start , last year I only used it for a week but was worth it to me
Sno dogs seem to be the new ticket

The 2 big factors fishing big water early or late ice , possible run off and wind direction
In the past I have switched shores do to wind , but that’s just me and be cautious spud and picks are a must in my book as things can change quickly that’s just observing for 50  years without a chaperone

I see open water on the Chapman Park and North Shore cams, and several portable shanties out of Sylvan Beach with what appears to be open water just beyond where they are. Sure hope the winds stay calm, as wave action from strong winds can easily destroy 4 inch thick ice. I know they may have float suits but getting back to shore with broken ice would be extremely difficult. Additionally, rescue personnel would find it challenging to get to them and put rescue persons at major risk. Sure hope nothing happens, causing the government to create some sort of new restrictions/laws for ice fishing. I hate to hear of anyone drowning because they went through the ice.

Fished Big Bay yesterday the 20th  Good 4-5"  depending how far out   I got there late, maybe 11 am   Had a real good bite for 2 hrs then they were real picky but fairly steady for the afternoon  Plans were to fish today but the Mrs had other plans for me   Back home now I'll be doing a crappie trip in the AM

Just went to cleveland and back, wide open for the most part. Like 8 shanties in front of Winns point, they are fishing 100 yards from open water. To each their own I guess.
