i think it would  be a  good  idea  but  what the state  will tell you   registration is  registration   period  it is  for off your property use ...belonging to a  club  merely  gives  you a  discount ......... ithink a  lake  only  registration would  be  great but they will never do it

Throughly agree!
You can save $25 if you join a snowmobile club first but what sense does that make for someone who just uses the sled on a lake and never uses a trail???
They should make the registration fee the same as an ATV (or less since you only use the snowmobile for a couple of months) and then require a separate sticker for those wanting to ride a trail.
That would be the logical and fair way to do it but will never happen due to the strong NYSSA snowmobile association that would lobby to oppose losing that free money.
There was a bill for non trail registration for $ 25 but it got sent to transportation and has never been herd of since.  That was about 10 years ago.  If you research the bills I think you can find it.

A friend got a ticket for unregistered sled
And no insurance, 200 plus court cost

That is true Joe. Transportation filed that bill in the garbage pail. I've been writing to my congresspersons for 20 years about sportsman and vintage regies, my sister was pres of NYSSA. The state and NYSSA like the $ and won't change.

Lots of fodder here for discussion. problem is, in most cases you can't just backup to the ice and unload. you will end up driving your sled down some town road or trail of some type to get to the ice  and guess what   gotcha   sounds like a great idea but it will never fly and this is just one of the reasons I won't own a sled   I'll go by foot or use my 4x4 occasionally  They haven't gotten nuts about them yet

Any clubs willing to give limited ice use fee structure so guys that only use sleds on ice still get the registration discount but pay less in club fees?
What are the typical club dues?
I'm in a business group that gives individuals the ability to join at a reduced rate with limited benefits compared to full price businesses where the rates are based on gross sales.

The local snowmobile club here is $30 a year.

I and my bud had a guy late last fall that sells fish to restaurants gave us a call to clean up some fish between  5-6 hours we did 360#s ,if I get a good catch I’ll sell some fish off to cover bait ,gas , lunch and some tackle if need be , Oneida perch never go to market
I give away fish to older friends , that don’t fish anymore, plus the wife has some widowed friends that still enjoy a few meals
