Last time I called Mother Oneida a name, she dumped 2’ of snow and the winds were blowing gusts of 40 mph….Freddie might recall that day!😜

The fishing was really good though!!😎

I came off the ice a little after 8. The whiteout just rolled through here and the wind picked up even more. The snow has stopped for now though.

I’d like some opinions on fishing walleyes and perch. By fishing to close to the bottom are you spooking the fish? I think it does, especially under a foot off of the bottom. I’m just wondering after a recent trip to the lake. I just feel like you’re not allowing them to get out of there comfort zone and if they’re around and fishing on the bottom you’re pushing them away because you’re to close to them. Opinions are much appreciated. Thanks, fishy

I usually go and pound the bottom and get the silt wrkd up and then jig a ft off the bottom seems to work on most lakes I icefish.

That is excellent advice for anyone that ice fishes. I was fishing a small lake years ago that I know very well and a storm came in and since I was about ready to leave shortly I panicked and packed up quick and headed back to shore, not being able to even see my feet in front of me. I ended up at the road completely on the opposite side of the lake from where my car was parked. Had to leave my gear on the ice and walk around the lake to get my car. Could have been a dangerous situation on a bigger lake or during late ice. That day I should have stayed put until it passed. Since then I always have my compass in my jacket pocket when ice fishing.

I’m planning to hit chaumont tomorrow if the wind settles down a little. If anyone has any recent fishing info please PM me, if the fishing is slow I will choose a closer destination.

If I am fishing just for walleyes my lure is normally pretty high. Lately I have been running at least 3’ off bottom and moving it up from there.

For perch I tend to be closer to bottom.

A lot of it has to do with the mood of the fish even the time of day.

release was showing off that day. He left a few minutes ahead of me. Figured I’d follow his tracks…. Nope, snow covered and couldn’t see his tracks. So I kept on going, no clue where I was going…. Up ahead was a shack and snowmobile I recognized. It was the ol buzzard. He said he came right to the exact holes he fished the day before…. With no compass or GPS!!!😁 crazy ol buzzard!!!😜

Fished til dusk one day with my grandpa because of this. We fished all day when we were going to pack up I stepped out and said nope not happening right now well 6 hour later and 2 feet of snow we pack up and walked off ice. Was a great day fishing was a very long tough walk back to truck
If you sit around all day and do nothing your a bum, but if you sit in a boat all day or in a shanty and do nothing they call you a fisherman

Back in the 80's and likely before that, there was a line of Christmas trees that would run from Constantia to Wantry Island that ice fisherman would use to get back to shore on a day like this. Back then you did not have the Electronics you have now and a compass was a must for navigation
