Houghton Lake Ice?
« on: Dec 14, 2023, 09:41 AM »
Checking in to see if there is any ice whatsoever on Houghton Lk.  I'm not expecting there to be safe ice, but wondering if by the time the warm weather hits this weekend I could get a boat in any of the launches.  And yes, I will call Lyman's too.  Thanks in advance.

From what i had heard it had formed then wind blew it all up.... Launches that are out of the wind may still be iced over

I’m going up to Houghton in a couple of weeks. The warm weather is messing things up. If the lake isn't frozen I’m using my rented cabin as a base station and going farther north. Hope I don’t have to do that?

Looks like maybe a thin layer of ice has reformed.  A few days ago I'm pretty sure you could see open water on this camera (sometimes it's hard to tell), so it might be a minute before it's safe.

I havent been up there, but watching that live cam lately it appears to be frozen quite a ways out.  Im sure its not the safest ice, but just my own guess.  Curious if anyone has any real intel on it or not.

I was on the north side of Houghton from Wednesday to Sunday. 10th -14th
I can tell you NO ONE was on the ice.
I drove an Hour North to the ONLY lake with people on it.
Otsego Lake. I fished it on Thursday and I heard two people had gone through by the State Park.
We followed some footsteps out to about 10 foot of water and found one perch as we sat in slush and 3 inches of ice.
It was the only day we fished. We did drive all the way to the bridge and didn't see anyone on the ice
except Fletcher Pond had 20 guys on 2 inches of ice.
The temps only dropped down on Sunday but most of the time it was 28 degrees clear to the bridge.

this was what the lake looked like Sunday before we left.
I also stopped by Cadillac and Mitchell and nothing going on there.

Appreciate the report!!  Curious what this week of cold temps are gonna do for all these lakes.   Those guys fishing 2” of ice are nuts.

Buc's Northern Michigan Fishing Report posted 4 hours ago that east bay still had 4-5" and a few guys out fishing yet. Not sure on the shore ice condition.
