2012 hunting season's end, time for some ice!
« on: Nov 26, 2012, 07:58 AM »
We ended our season well.  We killed 4 elk and a buck on Friday and then my son Josh got his first buck on Sunday.  Quite a nice whitetail for his first one.

Another shot of Josh and his buck.

3 elk and 2 deer.

The last elk.

We got lots of meat for the freezers!

Holy cow Jay.  Good work.  Are those all for your family alone?  My wife and I can make 1 elk last through the year, not sure what/where and how we would do with 4...  Did you get delivery of your trailer yet?  I'm going to be looking for you on the ice!

I didn't go elk hunting this year but we all went deer hunting, my son (age 12) got his first buck (small button buck), my GF got hers (a fork), and I got mine (a 4x4). We all used my .308 with 150gr ammo to take our deer on different days.

Here is a pic of me with mine. I actually got it Friday but the camera dates are off on my son's camera. It was literally a two hour hell pack from here to the truck that involved wading a river multiple times and more sweat than I have probably had since boot camp many years ago:

We already have 3 doe whitetail in the freezer so I will keep the calf elk and use the rest as trading stock.  I do quite a bit of bartering with friends from out of state.  I will take this down to California and trade it for dungeness crab, rock fish, ling-cod, and tuna.  This way I get seafood that we can't get up here and they get wild-game that they can't get down there.  Cheaper and better tasting than the stuff we can get at the store and keeps the land owners buttered up for us to hunt in the future.

Nice pics everyone.  I'm in mourning now that hunting season is over.  Tagged out this year, but still have that empty feeling.  Super jacked up to get on the ice!  Any word on Dog Lake?  I'm going in the weekend of the 8th.  I pretty sure there will be ice by then.

Dog Lake / Rainbow Lake up on the rez? I haven't been up there lately ( can't hunt on the rez so no reason for me to be up there during hunting season ). I am going to be out of state for my new work, possibly for several months so my ability to check it might be non-existent but I will check it for you if I am back here any time during ice season and post a report.

If I have time to run up there before I leave this week to head back east I will give you an ice report on it.

Checked it last Tuesday night and it had bout 3" of ice.  Looked a little soft but it has been cold the last 4 days so I'm sure it is fishable.

OK I checked it today at lunch. It is frozen over completely with only a few open patches right near a few edges of the lake. Ice depth is 3/4" - 1" and will not support my 185lbs. If we get no warm weather between now and the 8th I would say you might be able to get out on it, it would certainly be worth checking if you are close. Unfortunately I will be out of state at that time or I would check it again for you that Friday and let you know. Maybe somebody else on here who is close will do it for you? I will update the lake report and the ice conditions spread sheet in a bit here.

Thanks Cornbread.  Cold nights should make it safe in the next 10 days.  But, of course it looks like we can't get out of the 40's for the daytime temps.  At least it's been cold at night.

Set up a Photobucket account and upload your pictures to that. Then copy and paste the IMG code into the posting.

Nice bucks and bulls!

How warm was it over in NW MT today? Anybody know? I am in eastern Wyoming for work and it was over 50 degrees here today. This warm weather needs to go away ASAP!

That's awesome, gota love the breaks.  We hunt it the same way in a white 21ft thunder jet.  Can't beat getting away from the roads and on the water.
Did you go in at Crooked creek this year?  Was curious if you had any issues getting the boat on and off at the ramp with the low water.

That's crazy we have the same boat.  Can't believe I haven't seen you around.  I haven't launched at Crooked this year.  It must have been ok since they had that tournament there this year.  I assumed you were using that ramp since you were in 410....
