Drill your Hole faster.
« on: Mar 02, 2011, 12:46 PM »
To drill your holes faster with a hand auger, make a shim with a piece of a beer or soda can. Make the shim about 1/4 in wide & about the length of your blade then put it between the screws & the edge of you blade. I folded the pieces of tin over 4 times then pressed it together tight in some pliers.  What this does is it puts a little more of a downwards edge to your blade causing it to cut into the ice better. You may have to buy longer screws for your blade. You can get those at Home Depot for about 88 cents.

Probably not a great idea.  The manufactures build the augers and have all the angles set the way it has been proven to work the best and last the longest.  Shimming the blades is not exact,  one could be a little off from the other one.  But I guess if it works for you go ahead with it.

I can remember when you bought a Mora drill, it came new with shims.

Were the shims to make the angle steeper to make it drill quicker?  Just curious, I never knew that.  Only augers that I have used are my nils and my dads strikelite and model 30.

The motor for your manual auger is your arms, so for someone, sometimes shimming it makes it works better.  Personally I've only used it as OEM, so I'm okay with it.

I shim the blade as it gets worn.  Some times the edge gets bent from inexperienced use or banging the blades on the ice.  Aluminum cans are good for that.  Sometimes it gets an old set of blades thru the rest of the season.
