shallow water and smelt or small minnows have always worked for me with a salmon egg on the hook eye. ive done better with brookies over rocks and rainbows over beach sand

I have better luck with worms for rainbows than brookies, also try bright green or orange power bait layed on the bottom, get to the trap quick though because they like to hit and spit the fake stuff. And rainbows like jigs a lot!

I have only spent a limited time fishing rainbows but have found salmon eggs power eggs and worms work a lot better then shinners shinners. My favorite is to put a salmon egg or power egg up the shank of the hook on the eye and put a worm under it. I only use about three inches of the worm. I slide the hook through an end of the worm spit has about a 2.5 inch tail hanging from of so it looks like its sucking the egg. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The advice given here is great and will get you great success.  I will say, in my experience, I've got the "bigger" Rainbows in deeper water suspended in the column.

I can second this as well. while fishing in new hampshire last week for browns in 30 fow we caught 3 rainbows 6 feet under the ice. another thing to look for is streams flowing into the pond. set up at the inlets where the water is well oxygenated. if the pond has smelts that would be my go to spot in march.

I love fishing for big rainbows through the ice.
Fooled this one on a shiner a few weeks ago.
Powerbait suspended a few inches off of a sandy or gravel bottom has worked well for me too.

.

Twist your hook gap with a pair of pliers for more hooksets with powerbait.

Scouting holes with salmon eggs is always a hoot too !

Going out this weekend in search of big bows....
Cant wait !

I've found that they will change from day to day on what they wont and the depth you find them at, have got 22" bow in deep water and got a 19" in 1.5' of water.
