Flasher battery / charger issues
« on: Feb 28, 2019, 05:36 PM »
|I have a Humminbird ice 35 I bought about 7 years ago. Late last winter, the charger stopped working. My son pick up another charger for me, voltage was the same, but it's a 3 amp instead of 2 amp. I noticed the charge time went from a couple hours to less than 1/2 hour.

Early this winter, the original battery gave out. I replaced it with a similar battery designed for home alarms. Worked well for about a dozen outings, but now, when I run it for more than 5 hours, it dies one me.

Don't know if it's a bad battery, or not designed to be fished used in the cold. Or possibly an issue with the charger being too powerful and destroying the batteries.

Any tips?

I don't believe a charger putting out more than 1.5 amps is recommended for a flasher battery.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Original charger from Humminbird was 2 amps. Do you think 3 amp could have damaged it? My son has a 1.5 I can try...

Im not believing it.you would just get a little faster charge cycle.jmo.your battery may have a bad cell.charging up but cant handle a load.id go with a 9ah battery next time around.can be had for a little more than $20.maybe try your sons 1.5 charger.

It's possible. The thing that kills these small batteries is being overcharged. I wouldn't use a 3 amp charger on mine and I have had flasher batteries last as long as nine years. I use the charger that came with my LX5 and a Vexilar V 410 charger.

I don't know where you're located but if there's an interstate battery nearby call them. Also there are lithium ion batteries in 12 v 9 amp. They're a little pricey in comparison to SLA but last way longer and are susceptible to overcharging.

I'm in Canada. Turns out that they online store I ordered from has a 12 month warranty. They had a 9ah model with the same dimensions as mine, so I ordered one this morning. Once it arrives, will ship back defective one for refund of new battery price, provided they assess that something is wrong (which I explained to them). We'll see what happens, but I think I'm going to avoid the 3 amp charger on new battery just to be sure.

My vexed charger is only 1 AMp. High amp charging  Will shorten the life  of a battery
