i just got 5 new tip-up and need to put line on them.i do fish some pike ponds but never caught a pike thru the ice, mosty bass and pickeral yellow perch. the tip up say 200 yard spools but what do you guys use 100 yard? 50? I've seen a bass take 20-25 yards once. i got tons of 50 pound braid from fishing the cape cod canal, nut they say not to use it. thanks for any help, whats the most a fish has taken you? thenks ed

I typically use 50 yards of 20# or 15# tip up line. This is for pike bass walleye and panfish usually under 20’ with the occasional 30’ setup. The big reason not to use normal braid is that it will cut the heck out of your hands if you don’t have gloves on.

Striper around here you rarely fish water deeper than 30 feet mostly 15 feet or less for the most part I personally am a little lazy and when fingers are cold I dont need 100 yards of tangled frozen line on the ice to wind back so tie about 120 to 150 feet of line securely to the trap and then use appropriate leader material for the specie I am targeting my experience is you never land 100% of what bites no matter what you so I just want to enjoy the time on the ice if I go home empty handed and hungry there usually is a fillet of fish sandwich on the way home

25-36 lb test tip up line will be easy on your hands when fighting a fish & won’t tangle as easy on the ice. I’d put on 150 yards or backing then 50 yards of 30 lb new line. Just like a reel you want the spoil filled up, that gives a mechanical advantage & it will trip with less resistance, or at least the designed trip force.

Spool up with dacron line. Then use 25pound big line leader tied into quick strike rig. Don't be afraid to add blades rattles and scent to your package also. Set near bottom in shallows and half way down in 20ft or more.

I have a 1,000 yard spool that I use for my tip ups and then cusk lines when I head to NH. I think it’s either 20 or 25 pound test and it does the job.

Where can you get 12 to 20 lbs. Ice line? I'm assuming that is the mono with low old water memory?
