hand auger

how hard is it to punch holes on the red with a hand auger, is there one brand that is better than the other.

Hand augers are OK if you're on a budget and/or only plannng on drilling a couple holes. Once the ice gets thick drilling even a couple holes becomes a major chore. Best thing about hand augers is that when grunting and groaning through drilling a hole or two most decent neighbours will come by and punch some holes for ya with their power auger ;)

I had no problem until my wrists starting giving out on me. If you fish a lot I wouldn't recommend it IMO.  A 10" jiffy 3hp is what i have now and I love it!
