Title: My version of Ice Trolling
Post by: Garrett on Jul 08, 2019, 03:24 PM
I posted this in the tips section but decided to repost here to give this tip out to more people as this gets more visibility.
I carry a portable torch to start my charcoal heated tipups. Since I have this with me all the time, I now use my GPS maps to get me to a general location I like on the map, kick away the snow on the ice if there is any. Then hit the ice with the torch for 5-10 seconds to create a puddle on the surface. Then I set my vex transducer on the puddle to quick check the depth and if I see weeds or fish etc. I don't have to drill or clean holes or anything to check a spot that I want to fish. This works great for finding specific depths on a drop off to set tipups, finding specific contour changes such as inside turns, points or even bolder piles or cribs marked on my gps from summer scouting. I found that I don't even have to get out of my homemade tracksled I built to find my specific spot before setting up. Ice trolling, kinda.
