I sat down after studying a few different designs of rodholders and specifically ones that use the tension of a bent rod to set the hook when a fish bites.  I used a few thoughts from other members on here that have similar trigger mechanisms and this is what I came up with.  They are made from aluminum channel, stainless hardware, and PVC.  The two legs fold inward for easy storage and transportation and they are fairly light as well.  Should be able to get them out on the ice in a couple weeks!  Basically, the trigger goes into the eye of the rod tip and the line goes over the end of the trigger.  When the fish pulls the line down, the eye is released and the rod snaps up, setting the hook!  FISH ON!!!

Thanks so much... It's amazing the inspiration that IS has given me as well!  I will let you all know how it goes.  I picked up a GoPro camera this summer so I will be using that on the ice to do a few little clips of fishing this winter.  I will post that when I get some good footage...

I made something very similar out of a paperclip a few years ago. Works great.

Thanks all!  You know, KB, I think the paperclip is just about the most versitile invention of the 20th century.  It seems to have seen more uses by being converted into more things than anything else.  I think Macgyver even used one in every episode!   ;D

lol... I don't mind at all, except if they aren't catching any fish then make sure you cover up the name!  ;D  If you really do want to make some I can give you all the info on the dimensions and materials.  Might save you a bit of time.

Nice job man!

My only concern would be being made of aluminum they may heat up on sunny days and melt into the ice.
Just something to keep an eye on when your out there.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Thanks!  And good point.  Hopefully it isn't too bad of an issue.

They look really good nice job I love  the home made stuff  @) If a person was concerned  about it scratching they eye what about some kind of plastic dip or heat shrink maybe even strip some coating from electrical wire and feed it onto the clip.

Thats a great idea!  I thought about even coating it with a hard set epoxy.  The epoxy wouldn't have any friction like shrink tubbing but would be softer than the eye of the rod.  The other idea I was given was to use a zip-tie through the braces of the eye and insert the trigger into the loop of the zip tie.

MNcrappiecontrol... just sent you the PM.

Thanks again to you all!  I will definitely be getting shots of these in action...

I have made some before, they work well. Nice looking base, my are always kinda crude. On the metal trigger you can put multiple line holding bends allowing for different sensitivity settings for larger baits.
a bad day of fishin beats a good day workin!

fish4all:  I sent the PM... No need to give me much credit as so many things in my design have come from everyone else on IS as well.  Great group of people on here!

jeepinjeffxj:  I was thinking about that and have even come up with some other designs in my head but after making the ones that I did I figured I should just give em a try first.  It's awesome to hear how others have customized their own gear!

I wonder about using cutbait and setting it with the bail open?
