Title: Vertical ice lures from Sweden and Finland
Post by: Dustr on Feb 18, 2015, 06:49 PM
Does anybody use the vertical ice lures from Sweden and Finland? Vertical is an odd designation for them because most of them go horizontal at the top of a jigging stroke and glide out with a myriad of different actions depending upon model. You get different frequencies of side to side wobbles, vibrations from the whole length of the lure, tight tail wagging vibrations, a tight 360 loop like a wounded minnow and more. Killer on perch and walleye. They have a treble with the colored epoxy dot hung off a split ring or a short chain. Kind of hard to find over here but well worth the effort.

These look very cool and I think I'm gonna make some of my own....But the trebles seem like trouble when unhooking. Although most of my fish end up on the table, I hate to have to perform surgery on them before I can get my bait back down.

I have a Russian friend at work who goes back to the motherland every two years and have struck up a friendship with a Swedish gentleman who ships to me. There's always happyangler but you have to pay the killer shipping.

Rags, tell your friend you don't want the cheap chinese junk. Stay with:

Vanern
Elbe
Bore
Ran
Bergman
master pilkii
Elit
Abu, if he can find the Ivan or Lurette in the smaller sizes.

If he can get to a shop that has Finnish lures even better. Go with:

Puustvarven. The Hopeasiipi (Silver Wing) is the best of the best. It's an exact clone of the old Legend. The Nautilus is a close second but is not as versatile.
Ini
Rialinna
Tapsa-pilkit
Sepepilkit
Lindroos
Nils Master

Thanks for the reply

Does a Swedish pimple count?

That's interesting. Kinda jogs my memory..... Anyone else see the resemblance? Not that commercial stuff has the same action as hand tuned lures, but now I think I know where the idea came from.

I'm lookin' at the shape and the weighting of the body.... The bottom pic is from a Do-It swim jig mold, a Jig-a-Whopper knockoff from years gone by.

We use Swedish Pimples and Hali jigs here in Montana jigging for a variety of species.  You almost always see some kind of dropper hung 6"-8" down from the main jig.  The dropper is usually a glow-hook or a very small teardrop jig or ice fly.  This setup works on everything from trout and salmon to walleye and perch.  Swedish pimples and Hali's are the only Swedish-style jigs we really see in these parts.

That top pic is actually a screen shot from one of the vid links you posted. Now that you describe the process you can see the "solder sandwich" if you look close. I'd sure have a look at some makings vids, I do a lot of my own stuff and am not beyond playing....

Here you go Esox. The last one shows some specs for the Matveychikova and quite a few others. Check out the one with the hockey puck and the eye bolt.

This stuff is awesome! The simple tools and techniques belie the knowledge behind the manufacture. I can't imagine the trial and error that has gone into being able to hand fashion something like that. And that, perhaps, is the most interesting of all. the fact that each one is unique. Not stamped from a die or poured into a mold, individually hand cut from sheet metal, shaped and soldered free form only using a trained eye and experience to come up with a functional finished product.

Thanks for sharing Dustr! I'll be thinking on this for a while......

We used Lujon jigs for years, imported by Luhr Jenson,in sizes from 1 1/2" to 3 1/2" long.
Seemed like they worked better than the local go to Swedish Pimples!

A couple of them somewhat resemble a Swedish pimple called a Vingla. Awesome lure once you figure it out.
