Anyone know the conditions on big bay?
-
I heard that the popular access to Big Bay has been posted.
True?
-
yes that is true , pay and park at the bar now
-

>:(
I'm not sure how" legal" that posting is?
According to the Oswego County Tax Maps, which can be viewed at the Oswego County GIS Parcel Veiwer....
There is a definite PUBLIC ACCESS there . ;D
To the north, parcel 293.08-02-33 owned by Scott Whittaker
To the south, parcel 307.08-02-03 owned by Don Weber
The map clearly shows these properties do not adjoin. With the Right of Way between them.
Sounds like somebody is up to something?

Good work raate!
-
My buddy checked it out last week and said there is a No tress passing sign on a metal pole right at the culvert at the waters edge. there is no signs up by the road ??? ??? If its now posted then why is there NOT a sign right by the road ??? >:(
-
raate is right, that little strip between the properties is owned by the town of west monroe, and has always been public access.
-
yes i know that but a few years ago went through that and a guy was threatening to sue because he fell and they piled snow up in front of the entrance either way your going to pay to park ,then why is there no sign there stating public access? , looks like another shouting match again this year ;D
-
I do my best to avoid Big Bay. Especially on the weekends!

So the Marina is the only access now?? Or is the colvert still "legaly" ok?? Last time I went last year I used the colvert for the first time and parked on the road west of the bar....was that not a "ok" parking spot?? Wasnt sure if I should park in the lot at the end of the road since it says it is the lot for the storage place. I am still kinda new to ice fishing and dont want to be one of the ones parking in places that piss the local resedents off and make us loose access.

The parking lot at the storage place is where your supposed to park if you access by the culvert. There is a sign there that tells you how much to pay for parking and a box where you put your envelope with your name, lic plate #, etc... Thats if you can even access via the culvert anymore. Hope this helps man :-\

seen a couple people on big bay this afternoon
-
There are 2 "right of ways" and the one that is behind the Ship and Shore bar is one of them. Parking on public roads is banned due to a neighbor who did some politicking with the town years ago, I used to be really good friends with his son. He does look for anything to B about, so don't park on the street there. I think the parking at the storage place is 3 or 4 dollars, which isn't bad considering it is always plowed out and whatnot. Don't park and not pay, the guy has a tow truck business too, and you will find your vehicle gone when you get off the ice, or he will give you hell. He got after me one afternoon after I fished that morning and left, then didn't put loot in the box on my second trip. I told him I payed this morning, and asked if that was OK, he said it was and he checked the box and I was good to go.
Petey runs the bar at Big bay now, avid ice fisherman and really good egg all around. I dunno the deal with parking there.

does he know anything about the no tress passing sign at the culvert?

Perhaps one thing to consider & be cautious of, TONS of the real estate not on the lake but within 1/2 mile has a "deeded" right of way. This is more common than not around Oneida. Just check craigslist for real estate with Oneida as the key word. In order to save the money & hassel of establishing an HOA & having to charge extra fees to cover taxes on these pseudo private access points they just left them somewhat undeclared. Although the "spirit" of them was for use by property owners. They let the property taxes go because they got more outa the increased values of the occupied parcels with this access.
Be careful before you start a peeing match, & remember its probably tje behavior of fisherman that ticked off the residents to begin with. This never ends well.
-
the sign has been put up before ...and torn down this is not the first time it has happened i believe that is owned by the town ..........
-
hey trapp why don't they [town] put up a public access sign , to clear up the confusion , and if i lived there i would love to hear guys hooting it up and asking questions like hey how the f;;';you been , and so on at 5:30 in the morning , and i've heard it many times , must be a real treat , it was never an issue when brownie lived there
-
fillet because people are knuckleheads you know that last year i picked the guys wood op for him because people were using it to walk threw the water
-
Heard there is a bunch of guys out there right now
-
if you consider 2 a bunch then yes you are correct
-

Whooooooooooo AHaaaaaaaaaaa. we will all follow ;) there will be 50,000 other fisherman that will take that course by saturday i am sure. i will track myself north i think until this up rising is secure ::) ::) @) ;D
-
Spoke with an ECON that was going out to check licences there today, he stated that the sign says D.E.C on it and is not a D.E.C sign. He also said it is a 10' right of way, legal to use.
-
well then that sign needs to be removed then ;) ;)

Like I thought...Somebody is up to something ::) ::)
I have friends and family in that neighborhood who have these "deeded " right of ways...There is NO STIPULATION on the deeds, stating property owners ONLY...
Their friends/family and guests can access the lake through those areas.
As far as they are concerned, if you pay for parking at the Kangaroo Lot, you are a friend/guest of THAT PROPERTY, which is also deeded access. @)
-
well it looks like the dec wasted our money putting up that sign then does it not ??? ??? ??? ??? i mean really why bother ???
-
Its looks like the sign didnt last long, i think dec took it down, i saw his suv at ship n shore bar when i left, also be very cautious as i witnessed someone go thru today. I would stay off it for now.

so who will be out in the morning?

just wondering what officer you spoke too it helps if a land owner calls the sheriffs to have the dec officers name handy
-
Ha ha that's a trooper right if at first you don't succeed try again . Love it !
-
i hope the dec investigates who is placing signs using the dec ... this has to be a offance in it's self
-
yes it is forgery >:(
-
I was told tonight by someone that called the number on the sign for region 7 that the dec put the sign there becuase they were under the assumption that it was private but took it down because they too figured out its owned by the town
-
Glad the access issue was straightened out. Hope everyone stays dry this weekend too.
-
Mrs filet checked it out on the tax maps and talked to the lady incharge of region 7 this morning and they told her they would check into it , nothing like one state agency talking to another ;) I'm glad the sign is down and remember people are sleeping early in the morning ,
-
ya know wouldn't hurt if a few people just stoped and talked to the gentleman ... i know people got in his wood last year and tossed it so they could get accross without getting wet feet! i also know i picked up alot of trash right threw there .... to be honest if i had people walking near my home grabbing wood i would be upset too
-

You are 100% right. Just because we may have the "legal" right to use it dosnt mean we get to ransack everything around it. Likely if we, as a whole were more considerate to others around our access areas we would have less problems getting on and probably more access. Think what u would like to see there if it was your home that backed up to that.
-
Thats the problem with public access. scum bags ruin it with. People cant pick up after themselves and think they can do what they want and not follow rules. It effects the local people. I wouldnt want people touching my stuff on my property or parking in my yard or doing whatever else. This is why public access spots are getting harder and harder to come by. It is the same things with snowmobile trails and atv trails etc. People cant have respect for others.
-
Three guys went swimming today.. Ill say it again.. Stay of the bay.. Nuff said
-
sometimes that back corner freezes funny too ....be careful out there boys

-
wasn't this discussed yesterday about ice conditions on BB ? don't worry darwin will be looking for canidates on Sun. ::)
-
often right of ways are specific to people that live on the street or with in so many ft of the right of way. If its open to the public it should say Public access to Lake. Public parking is another thing.
-
thats true except any sign would be torn down this is a town owned culvert pipe between to parcels of land , and the people using this right of way are paying another land owner to park , this debate has gone on for years and the town always has backed the fisherman ... the problem is this land owner has some honest complaints .... like the noise like the trash and like the wood being used .... interesting note the DEC uses this access to get on the water also ..... as sportssmen if we want it to stay open ... we have to pick up after the slops we have to tell people hey keep it down ! we have to police it a little you see the mans wood moved put it back or at least knock on his door and offer to help!

So....... Is BB still a mine field of crap ice like before the warm up????? Have Monday afternoon free and the kids are out of school and I wanted to get them out with the new shack and chase some pickerel. Only got my oldest out once so far this season and my middle one is really chomping at the bit to get out fishing but I'm not going to take them out there if they're going to end up swimming. I know...I know....." Go burn some gas and check the ice for yourself". And I will once I get there but if its still scketchy I would rather save myself the pissed off kids in the car when we get there and I don't feel comfortable taking them out on it and we don't have time then to find somewhere else for the afternoon.
-
emtorn, the ice at big bay is fine there where many people there today. ice thickness 4-6 inch's. good luck and have fun

If your after pickerel and worried about the ice, you might try some of the smaller madison co lakes, like tuscarora, deruyter, or lake moraine..all have lots of pickerel and probably more ice, check the small water madison co thread.

Planned to go that way but now have to work Sunday night so will be taking a quick nap till maybe noon and then have to pack up the gear and the kids. To drive an hour to a Madison county lake will eat into the already small window of fishing time I've got that day. BB is maybe 20 min for me.

a guy lost two pole on big bay. check out his post :)
-
Any ice left on Big Bay after all of this wind?? :'(
-
Thinking BB with the kids tomorrow is prob out after this wind today. Anyone have eyes on the bay this eve?? Did it get beat up like the rest of the lake??
-
Hi Guys,
We're a couple hours away from the lake but usually stay on the West End. Is River Rat still in business? I see the website is no longer valid. Any news would be appreciated. Thank you!
-
Thanks KP. We're there all spring/summer each year but never got up on the hardwater last season. Had a good day the year before until the engine on sled locked up. Hope we can join you all again this season. We like the deeper areas off the North Shore and West towards the Islands so we will wait it out and see. Will go back to Rick then for bait like we always have. RR was convenient the one time that we stayed just South of Central Square. Thanks again.
-
Gonna be slushy out there today boys. We got 2 feet of snow last night in Toad Harbor / Big Bay area. Be careful and give us a new report today..
-
Okay, after reading through all the pages I am still sort of confused as to where is best to access BB. I'm coming from Rochester and have never fished it before and am not familiar with the area so would anyone be able to post or pm me in the right direction? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
