I heard that the popular access to Big Bay has been posted.
True?

>:(

I'm not sure how" legal" that posting is?

According to the Oswego County Tax Maps, which can be viewed at the Oswego County GIS Parcel Veiwer....

There is a definite PUBLIC ACCESS there .  ;D

To the north, parcel 293.08-02-33 owned by Scott Whittaker
To the south, parcel 307.08-02-03 owned by Don Weber

The map clearly shows these properties do not adjoin. With the Right of Way between them.

Sounds like somebody is up to something?

raate is right, that little strip between the properties is owned by the town of west monroe, and has always been public access.

yes i know that but a few years ago went through that and a guy was threatening to sue because he fell and they piled snow up in front of the entrance either way your going to pay to park ,then why is there no sign there stating public access? , looks like another shouting match again this year  ;D

So the Marina is the only access now?? Or is the colvert still "legaly" ok?? Last time I went last year I used the colvert for the first time and parked on the road west of the bar....was that not a "ok" parking spot?? Wasnt sure if I should park in the lot at the end of the road since it says it is the lot for the storage place. I am still kinda new to ice fishing and dont want to be one of the ones parking in places that piss the local resedents off and make us loose access.

The parking lot at the storage place is where your supposed to park if you access by the culvert.  There is a sign there that tells you how much to pay for parking and a box where you put your envelope with your name, lic plate #, etc...  Thats if you can even access via the culvert anymore.  Hope this helps man :-\

There are 2 "right of ways" and the one that is behind the Ship and Shore bar is one of them. Parking on public roads is banned due to a neighbor who did some politicking with the town years ago, I used to be really good friends with his son. He does look for anything to B about, so don't park on the street there. I think the parking at the storage place is 3 or 4 dollars, which isn't bad considering it is always plowed out and whatnot. Don't park and not pay, the guy has a tow truck business too, and you will find your vehicle gone when you get off the ice, or he will give you hell. He got after me one afternoon after I fished that morning and left, then didn't put loot in the box on my second trip. I told him I payed this morning, and asked if that was OK, he said it was and he checked the box and I was good to go.

Petey runs the bar at Big bay now, avid ice fisherman and really good egg all around. I dunno the deal with parking there.

Perhaps one thing to consider & be cautious of, TONS of the real estate not on the lake but within 1/2 mile has a "deeded" right of way.  This is more common than not around Oneida. Just check craigslist for real estate with Oneida as the key word.  In order to save the money & hassel of establishing an HOA & having to charge extra fees to cover taxes on these pseudo private access points they just left them somewhat undeclared.  Although the "spirit" of them was for use by property owners.  They let the property taxes go because they got more outa the increased values of the occupied parcels with this access.
Be careful before you start a peeing match, & remember its probably tje behavior of fisherman that ticked off the residents to begin with.  This never ends well.

Spoke with an ECON that was going out to check licences there today, he stated that the sign says D.E.C on it and is not a D.E.C sign. He also said it is a 10' right of way, legal to use.

Like I thought...Somebody is up to something ::) ::)

I have friends and family in that neighborhood who have these "deeded " right of ways...There is NO STIPULATION on the deeds, stating property owners ONLY...

Their friends/family and guests can access the lake through those areas.

As far as they are concerned, if you pay for parking at the Kangaroo Lot, you are a friend/guest of THAT PROPERTY, which is also deeded access.  @)

You are 100% right. Just because we may have the "legal" right to use it dosnt mean we get to ransack everything around it. Likely if we, as a whole were more considerate to others around our access areas we would have less problems getting on and probably more access. Think what u would like to see there if it was your home that backed up to that.
Title: Re: Big bay. Oneida lake.
Post by: s10xr on Jan 05, 2013, 06:30 AM
Thats the problem with public access.  scum bags ruin it with.  People cant pick up after themselves and think they can do what they want and not follow rules.  It effects the local people.  I wouldnt want people touching my stuff on my property or parking in my yard or doing whatever else.  This is why public access spots are getting harder and harder to come by. It is the same things with snowmobile trails and atv trails etc.  People cant have respect for others.

often right of ways are specific to people that live on the street or with in so many ft of the right of way. If its open to the public it should say Public access to Lake.  Public parking is another thing.

So....... Is BB still a mine field of crap ice like before the warm up????? Have Monday afternoon free and the kids are out of school and I wanted to get them out with the new shack and chase some pickerel. Only got my oldest out once so far this season and my middle one is really chomping at the bit to get out fishing but I'm not going to take them out there if they're going to end up swimming. I know...I know....." Go burn some gas and check the ice for yourself". And I will once I get there but if its still scketchy I would rather save myself the pissed off kids in the car when we get there and I don't feel comfortable taking them out on it and we don't have time then to find somewhere else for the afternoon.

If your after pickerel and worried about the ice, you might try some of the smaller madison co lakes, like tuscarora, deruyter, or lake moraine..all have lots of pickerel and probably more ice, check the small water madison co thread.

Planned to go that way but now have to work Sunday night so will be taking a quick nap till maybe noon and then have to pack up the gear and the kids. To drive an hour to a Madison county lake will eat into the already small window of fishing time I've got that day. BB is maybe 20 min for me.

Hi Guys,

We're a couple hours away from the lake but usually stay on the West End.  Is River Rat still in business?  I see the website is no longer valid.  Any news would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Thanks KP.  We're there all spring/summer each year but never got up on the hardwater last season.  Had a good day the year before until the engine on sled locked up.  Hope we can join you all again this season.  We like the deeper areas off the North Shore and West towards the Islands so we will wait it out and see.  Will go back to Rick then for bait like we always have.  RR was convenient the one time that we stayed just South of Central Square.  Thanks again.

Okay, after reading through all the pages I am still sort of confused as to where is best to access BB. I'm coming from Rochester and have never fished it before and am not familiar with the area so would anyone be able to post or pm me in the right direction? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
