Ordered my Otter II Medium online and got all the stuff in this week. Put the tow bar together and put on the Hyfax runners yesterday. Only problem was the cover they sent was the drab olive color. The package was marked as being black so back it goes. A minor danger of buying online. Hope they can get me the correct one soon, this sled is great.

My Sled!
(Image removed from quote.)

IceMedic, I like your sled.  I built something similar before I saw yours.  I put my cross pieces too low and it acted like a plow the first time out.  I need to raise it up like yours.  I have a couple of questions.  What are the vertical struts made from?  How did you fasten them to the skis? How well does it pull in snow?  Thanks for sharing.
Steve

I have to show off my newly acquired "Ice Fishing Equipment Relocation Device" sled. I have been on hard water for about 3 years now (Camo_Fish showed me the light) and for the past two I have been using this el cheap-O kiddy sled to pull my gear. What ever works right? Well two years was to long with that thing. Below is a picture of the thing empty. Not very big huh?

I had to put two board across it to hold my bait cooler, tipup box, as well as trying to keep the thing from tipping over. Almost every trip (especially in snow more than 6 inches deep) the thing would tip over on me. Oops there went the bait, hooks, jigs, etc. (its enough to drive you insane  :cookoo: ) It also sunk in the snow making it hard to pull and any new gear had to be piled on top making easier to tip over.  :%$#!: :%$#!: :%$#!:

Well yesterday I finally broke down and bought myself one of these jet sled I see everyone has. (I have pulled some gear in one before and WOW what a difference)

Man what a difference it makes when my gear is stod!!! No more tipovers, no more gear sliding off the board, and I know the thing pulls easier with the weight distributed better.

I can't wait to actually use it on the ice

So now that you have all read my boring little yahoo, lets see what you are all dragging on the ice. Post them all, pulled by human power or machine power. Stay on top y'all

well here is the alternative to a rope my father came up with for the otter

here is the connection....just some pipe hanger parts

here is the handle connected

here is a view of the whole thing. the handle is just a bent piece of electrical conduit

better than a rope because you dont have to chase it downhill

Hello, all you iceheads. I'm a new member from Nebraska who stumbled across your great site and this thread while looking for ice fishing sled design ideas. Here's a picture of what I came up with and built this week. I'm pretty darned pleased with how it turned out, although I should have probably put pontoons and a motor on it. Can't wait until we get enough ice to use it, but at least the weather's been good for something!

I haven't weighed it. It's nothing I'd want to carry across the desert, but it's light enough that I can lift it into the truck bed without any trouble.

Nice sled Dawger - welcome to IS too!  I have one of your poles as a fishing decoration in my cabin.  Never seen one before until that one and now the ones in your pics!  They are indeed neat although yours look like mint condition compared to the one I came across!!!

I do most of my ice fishing for bluegill and perch at a shallow lake near here. The sticks are perfect for pulling the pannies right out of the ice, but I wouldn't want to pull a 20-pound northern in from 60 feet with one  ;)

Great job Hawg, and awesome looking sled!   If you want to lighten the load up quite a bit, you may want to consider downsizing the 20lb propane to a 5 pounder.  That's what I have for my sled (pics are on this thread somewhere).  I can get about 5 full day burns out of it, and when I use it in my shanty I only run it an hour at a time and it lasts a lot longer.
Awesome sled though, I especially like the rod clips.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

Thanks for the great tip about the propane bottle, Togue. That will definitely lighten the load. I was really impressed with your sled, too. Love how you did the windbreak and heater.

Thanks! My girlfriend is always kidding me on how many things I build with PVC pipe, and says I "ogle it" whenever we go to Home Depot together, but I love working with that stuff!  ;D
If you're interested I have some detailed pics of the PVC frame for someone else on here that is building one, so if you want those pics and how I sewed up the fabric for the windbreak, PM me and I'll email them to you.
