picked up a pair of kids downhill skis for $5 at a thrift shop.
I drive a little Chevy Aveo and need to come up with something that will fit in the back. I'm thinking folding but I also like the one with the removable cross boards. Folding would keep everything together though....any ideas??? was thinking hinged cross members maybe?

New member here. This is the little sled my neighbor gave me. Used it for two season, but ended up being too small.

As you can see, we use it for a cooler now! ;D

I decided to make y own sled. I am a trailer mechanic, so I got some trailer side sheets, and cut and bent them to form the sled. Took a ton of rivets to put it together. Added two skis, and off we went. Oh the little sled came with a wind deflector. I took the poles and fitted a tarp for the sides. Works well. The hole sled is very light and holds all my stuff.

Looking forward to the up coming season. Here in CT it's a short one, but we get out as much as we can.

Finally got around to taking some pics of my glide-lite. It only gets used in early season and late season, rest of the time we drive the atv's. You may notice my sled is pretty similiar to JJC155's from the forums - he's my fishing buddy and we tend to both mod stuff until one of us comes up with something that works well and then the other one copies it.

I think strikemaster helped themselves to your design!!! look how similiar your homemade wood sled is to my glide lite in the pic above yours. I think you need to get some royalties on this on :)

The boy and I got after it again this morning.  Here are a few pics of the progression of our new Hybrid sled.  We started with the problem of attaching the skis to the sled.  We needed the skis to be removable so pinning them in place seemed to be the only logical choice.    We already had the wooden blocks on the skis from our former "Smitty Sled", we just modified them to work with the PVC.  We attached PVC T's to the lower frame of the sled and added the pins to the T.  We didn't want the pins to bottom out in the block so the sled "rides" on the fitting.              And a pic of it assembled.  We also added the bracket for holding our Coleman stove in place at the back of the sled as well as putting in brackets to hold the stove stand in place in the sled for when we are cooking.  Putting the stove stand in the sled gets it up a bit higher instead of having to bend over to cook.  The coleman stove stands are a little short.                                                   We also got the luan floor fitted, but was having some trouble with photobucket.  I will post the pics of the floor ASAP.  I hope this is inspiring some of you to try to do it for yourselves.  It is a lot of fun to do, and you will be rewarded with your own idea of the perfect ice sled.

 Hi geothefisher and gfisher95

Job well done guys.  Excellent G and G. You two had a very productive day.
I like how you have the Stove in its own holder ( for easy transport)  and really like that you have the legs of the
Propane Stove Rack (table) in there own holder ( elbow) at the bottom of each leg.

Great idea for the way you have the frame sitting on the pins of the Skis to slide over them. Easy on and easy off. Nice Idea!
Indeed you have given us all some great ideas and thoughts.  Thanks

Well back to the basement, I had to take a late lunch break as I am also working on my Propane Stove Holder and Table.

Later.

We also made up 10 rod holders today.  I'm still thinking about how I want to attach them to the sled.

As some of you may remember I built an ice sled for my shanty and gear out of wood & milkcrates. And I believe there is a post earlier in this thread that shows the sled. Well the original design proved to work well except for the fact that when pulled in the snow the milkcrates got loaded up with snow. Which others here mentioned would probably happen.  ;)
So this year I addressed that problem. Here is a pic of the original design.

And here are some shots of the sled with the improvements. We'll see how well it does this season.  :-\

Hey  Steellord

That look like she won't fill up with snow now. It may also ride a little higher on top of the snow a little more. Still making
it easy to pull as well as light still.

 Nice fix.

Here's my Jet Sled I just finished working on. Mounted the rod/spoon holders which works out well. I also needed more room in the sled for my power auger and flasher, etc. The buckets just took up too much space and I wanted them more secure so I set up the rig you see.

Hi Junior58

Awesome sled. I really like what you have done with the double bucket holder. Way to get them out of the way
so that it gives you that more storing space.

It keeps everything very organized.

Great set up.

Nice design Junior I could be wrong but after you put some water in those two buckets might be kinda of rear end heavy and you could be doing some wrestling with your gear nice work though

Thanks, I thought of that actually. Right now in the pictures the sled is empty but the larger Frabill bucket is loaded with all my tackle boxes and extras under the seat and used for sitting only. I only have a small minnow bucket in the smaller one. I added a longer pull rope to keep the pulling angle down as I'm 6'7" and not too level angle wise when pulling  ;D. The neutralizer to the weight balance is my Electra Lazer auger which has the powerhead in the front of the sled in a full case which more them evens out the balance when pulling. When the sled is empty at rest (with buckets on back) it doesn't even lift up.

Nope, I ordered them from a horse feeding store on the net. Esentially they are horse feed bucket holder which are the same size as most ice fishing buckets. They are designed to go over a horse stall door but I put them over a piece of unistrut. They were $19 a piece.

Ok here is mine I've been working on!  It's made from old bread trays I had laying around

Lots of storage under the Clam 2000 and air can get into it if any gear gets wet, so it can dry out

Hey WildoutdoorAddict

Nice set up. Man it looks light. Excuss my dumbness but are those Cross country skis?
The reason I ask, is because a friend of mine gave me some old skis that happened to be cross country skis.
I have not had a chance to work on em yet. But I did notice that have a certain length of some kind of felt.
( I take it is to help grab the snow on a forward stork to maintain momentum.)

Anyways if your are Cross country did you dig out the felt part?

Some cross country skis have tread like grooves on the underside of them. I used a set under a sled I sold. The groves would help not let the sled slide backwards. The only problem with the cross country skis, is that the ends are very thin. Only the middle is think enough to screw into.

Your gunna love it!! I have one that my neighbor gave me. Even has the wind break! I only made my big one, cause it didn't hold all my gear. I still use it for food and misc gear when needed, or if I go by my self.

Yes they are cross country skis!  They are very thin on the ends I used 1/4 inch carriage bolts to bolt the pipe caps to them so the round head won't grab on anything while dragging it. There was no felt on these skis, just the notched bottons that someone mentioned.

When I have a minute I'll try to dig out that felted area and see how it goes.

Nice set up AdamT.
