Keeping a drill Dry
« on: Jan 21, 2019, 01:50 PM »
After using a hand auger for years I am thinking of upgrading to a Kdrill/cordless drill combo.   I am worried about keeping the drill snow/rain free as a mostly fish by hole hopping without a shack.  Has anyone experienced issues with this or came up with a solution.  I have a cloth bag from an old snow mobile helmet that I’m thinking would keep the snow out when not in use.  Thank you.

I've been using my drill without one for years now without any issues. But I understand you want to protect your investment

Ice Scratcher made a nice cover out of an antifreeze jug.

Alright guys, since the photo bucket crash, all pictures of my creations are now unavailable...

I'm making this one thread as a compilation of my ideas, starting with the most recent pics that are still on my phone...

First off, my drill cover, made from an antifreeze gallon jug...

Hoping you all find these items helpful..

Thanks for looking...

Contractors use drills out in all weather, the snow won't hurt it. I do have the clamplate and that holds it up off the ice/ snow. If your worried just carry a bag and put over it while it's not in use.

I don’t generally ice fish in heavy rain so it is not an issue. My drill has been out in -10 and driving snow with no issues.

I just take care to put it behind the shanty out of the direct snow.

Clam drill plate will keep the drill off the ice but snow is a different issue

Disagree about contractors,  the time and material ones don't care.  Gets trashed it's just another material.
Good folks protect their investments because it's not so easily replaced.
I don't carry a electronic device on ice other than a vexliar,  I put it in a soft case cool pack.
An electronic drill I'd prefer a hard case for transportation and not letting it filled with snow.
The suggestions of leaving it upright in the ice are spot on and a heavyweight ( Stewart's 👍) plastic bag and bungee is simple.  Hopefully they ( Stewart's bags) aren't outlawed in nys shortly.

I use a ryobi drill. I got a pile of them from several package deals where i get the same drill....i just throw it in the water and snow without a care. I have destroyed 1 drill after 3 years and  2000+ holes and dull blades. They will take a lot of abuse but will break. If you take care of it at all you should be fine. I only worry about the batteries.

Scratcher's idea is pretty nice...saw it on youtube too...think this would be great if you want to cover your drill
