First time with a smitty sled
« on: Jan 12, 2019, 07:01 PM »
I have a large 2 man that probably weighs 230# loaded. This year I built a smitty and wondered why I didn't years ago. WOW what a difference.

Best thing since sliced bread.  Wait til you pull it in 10" of snow, still pulls easier then plowing snow with just your hut.

Made a pair last year. Sorry I didn't have 1 yesterday. Was like dragging a deer across the lake.

Question to you who have made one, do you you have the cross beams stop at the inside of the hyfax, or do you go out to the edge of the shanty  and just ratchet strap it on?

I really would like to build one, just have some questions.

I like having my Smitty wider than the sled. I can strap or bungee extra stuff on the Smitty that I couldn't fit in the sled. Wider is nice and stable too but too wide is a bit more challenging to steer or even navigate through woods if you have too

Full throttle, like your sled. What was your intention with the tubing on the back?

I made mine wider to fit my shanty. I went 32” from middle of ski to middle of other ski. Thinking of making 2 more cross beams to go 48” to see how that works.

That's exactly what I do. Strap my hub shanty to the side of the sled. Im toying with the idea like you have for storing my heritage Lakers as well. Only problem is if I do what you did I can't close my tonneau cover on my truck.

I love that idea. I have a 2 man. This would work well for that as I could attach a bracket in order to carry my auger. How do attach the cross members to the 2x8's?

Do you want it to have the capability of being able to be broken down for storage or transport

Notching the 2x8 to accommodate the 2x4 will make it more sturdy. Then use a carriage bolt. There are many pictures out there. I don't happen to have a pic of mine.

Would I be able to remove the cross members with a carriage bolt?

Also, how far from the front of the skis should I start the 2x8?

That helps alot. Just so I am correct. You just set the cross members bin and don't attach them?

Do you think 2x8 is good or should I go with 2x10?

And should I just attach the 2x8/2x10 with deck screws underneath the skis?

Sorry for all the questions and thank you so much for all the help!

Yes you can still remove the cross members. Mine I made the mistake of using two carriage bolts instead of one. Plus my notches were too snug. I had to use a hammer/sledge to get them off. I ended up breaking the top part of the upright off
