You can't consider going to the breakwall gaps, as  many times on an irregular schedule, a ice breaker will smash up the ice, that has been past practice, and you never know. I believe it is or was the Fireboat Cotter.

It was  - 3 degrees at my home in the Point Breeze area this morning at 7 AM, now at 10: 35 AM, we are having a heat wave at 2 degrees F

Hang on to your britches as they say! Lol ;)

Rumor has it that the Coast Guard ice cutters are going to break a trail through Erie ice so some freighter can get through.  They must have gotten caught out of their Winter ports.

I just heard about that spot. Are you talking by the south gap and union ship canal? Deep hole in that area I hear you get bigger perch and an occasional walleye.

Just got home from Sturgeon Point.

No one out on the ice. The harbor is starting to water up in several areas, and there are many wet areas off shore.
The ice is bumpy, corn cobbed and wind strewn. I would not make the trip there yet for any price.  Yuk!

Hope this helps!

How thick was ice at Sturgeon? The warm weather wed. - fri. will smooth out the ice for the drag. Not liking the above freezing temps overnight though. Long range Saturday night on single digits to 20 degrees for 4 days. Looking good for this season. Lots of snow on some of the lakes around here will be gone.

I live off old lakeshore rd. And moved from central ny. I see most guys say they go a few miles out. Do perch and walleye not come in often on Lake Erie in the 8-25ft range? Never fished it and looking for a little info.

Little different than inland lakes in that the perch and Walleye tend to stay in a minimum of 40 ft of water, but mostly the 50 to 60 ft range during the winter. Some fishermen go a tad deeper. You never know where you will find them.

A good starting point is to look out into the ice field, and see where all the people are, then start walking in that general direction. When you get into the mix, start drilling your hole. You may have to move several times to locate the schooled perch. In winter, a walleye is mainly a bonus fish.

Hope this helps.

The past couple years perch haven't been schooled up like they used to be. Maybe it's me not being able to find the schools. Dave at Dave's bait told me that it's possible the walleye are breaking the schools up. The walleye population is wonderful. Can't wait to make it out there.
