Deep Creek Lakes Kids Fishing Feb. 5
« on: Jan 23, 2022, 09:00 AM »
After a 2-year hiatus, The Deep Creek Lake Hard Water Anglers Seventh Annual Kids Fun Fishing Day will be held Saturday, February 5,  2022 at the Deep Creek Lake State Park. (Young fisherpersons who have grown older are welcome to participate!)

Registration will begin at 8:30am outside the Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center This event is free and open to the public. An adult needs to be on the ice with their kids at all times. This is not a drop off event & childcare will not be provided. Parents will be required to sign a liability waiver form. Please observe Covid protocols when gathered in a group.

Registration is strongly suggested. There will be a limit of 50 kids. To register reply to this email, or call Mr. John at 703-822-3485

Bait will be provided and no equipment is necessary. Experienced anglers will pre-fish and verify ice conditions prior to the event.

We will be fishing State Park Cove, one of Deep Creek Premier ice fishing hot spots. Targeted species will be Bluegills, Yellow Perch, Walleyes, Northern Pike, Trout and Crappies.

Hands on workshop stations will cover:

1.    Basic fishing techniques (tackle, jigs, bobbers, knots, bait, etc);

2.    Basic electronics (flashers, underwater cameras);

3.    Basic jigging techniques;

5.    Tip-ups;

6.    Ice safety;

7.    Ice fishing strategy.

Following the workshops, the kids will be given ample opportunity to put their newly learned skills to practice.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to introduce children to the exciting sport of ice fishing. To preregister or to volunteer to teach a workshop, contact Mr. (John [email protected]) or call 703-822-3485.
Please have the kids dress warmly. Hand & toe warmers are recommended. You should also consider investing in children’s boot cleats, as the ice may be slippery. Inexpensive cleats can be found at stores like Cabalas, or found on Amazon. Otherwise just bring yourselves. Parents don’t need a fishing license to help the kids, but if you wish to try your hand at fishing, please get one. Please park in the Discovery Center upper parking lot.

Here is the schedule of activities:

• 8::30 to 9:30- registration & orientation. Check out equipment.
• 9:30 to 9:45- Short presentation on ice safety
• 10:00 to 1030- Move to lake & stations (Flashers, tipups, basic jigging, palm rods)
• 11:00 to 2:00- Free Fishing
• 2:30 - return equipment & leave Discovery Center

Glad to see the event returning to DCL.
I have saw a lot of happy kids at the event in the past.
Hoping to get my grandson over to it this year.
Many thanks to all who help make it possible!

Maryland Public TV is filming it this year for a broadcast documentary. Pass the word along.
