Question about keeping limits of fish overnight??
« on: Dec 14, 2008, 07:15 PM »
Ive always wondered this...

So, say im out fishing in our wheelhouse, and catch a limit of crappies that day.  Then decide to spend the night on the ice and catch more fish the next day.  To anyone who was out there with me, they'd know I had a limit one day, and a limit the next day, which is completely LEGAL.  But to a CO or something, it could easily appear I have twice my limit for the day, which is ILLEGAL.

What should one do in a situation like this, or how can one avoid the situation all together?

Don't keep a limit the first day. Keep half a legal limit and then catch the other half the next day  :)

In South Dakota you have to remove your catch from the ice before keeping anouther days limit. They can be on shore in the truck, but not in your shack on the ice.

Even then though, what happens when a CO walks up to you asking to see your catch as you're leaving the lake with 2 limits?

There is a possesion limit and a daily limit. once your off the ice your not fishing and they become part of your "possesion" limit.

You can't keep anymore if you've got your limit.  Then again you shouldn't drink and drive on the way home either.??  I'd say eat some for breakfast/lunch and replace the ones you ate.  That way if you ate say 6 of them....then you can replace those 6 if you get back into them.  Then again, you can always practice catch and release and save them for your next outing?
That taxidermy man back home gonna have a heart attack when he see what I bring'em!!

This is true , however if you were fishing over night as he is suggesting and you put day 1 limit in you're vehicle and then go back out and catch day two limit you would be in violation of the possession limit as soon as you loaded up with the second limit .

Also, aside from perch, the possession limit is the same as the daily limit in MN.

Not in SD, your possesion limit is like 5 times the Daily limit

Really? So you have to give your fish away or eat them before you can go out and keep anothr limit on another day?

No, we just clean them and freeze the filets.  Throw out the carcasses.

2 fillets are no different than 1 fish, they count the same as far as possesion limits.

I don't get whats wrong with stocking up your freezer?  I don't think that counts as possesion, only when your out on the lake.  I've never been blessed with limiting out two days in the row though

I agree with this, but I guess I could be wrong.  Doesn't seem right that i'd have to eat what I catch before I can catch more another day...

LoL Get caught here with fillets from a fish that has a size limit w/o a carcass and you might as well open your wallet. A few of us have talked about this problem over the summer on some other forums. We mostly fish from 10pm until 2am that morning. It is really hard to try and explain to a CO/DNR guy that the limit you caught by 11:30 doesn't count towards your next days limit after midnight. It is easier to not get your limit until after midnight. They write the tickets though, so it is up to them to make the judgement call as to whether you are legal or not, even if you think you are.

Im sure states vary, but here You can not have more than one possesion limit in your freezer for each license holder.Obviously they are not going to go door to door checking, but if somone turns you in they can check.

In MN, possession limit is the same as daily limit, so just eat them all for dinner and breakfast.  If you want to keep fish and fish both days, I would go with the catch and release.

Be careful of what you throw in your trunk. We had an encounter with an encon officer who checked everything for fish.  Pack baskets, under stumps the island we set up camp, bait buckets, you name it.  Then he met us when we got off the ice and checked our car.  Stupid guy wasted his whole day harassing us to end up seeing that we actually abide by the rules.  Man what a jerk he was.  Enough is enough sometimes ya know?

So I wonder how that works when all those MN guys come to SD and take SD possesion limit back to MN. Kinda hard to prive you caught them in SD once your on MN soil.

They have to be labelled and their SD license number needs to be on every package.  Why would people from the land of 10,000 lakes go fish in the land of 4 lakes? ;D

Because we dont have a season on our lakes. We see more MN plates than local at the boat docks each spring.

From Minnesota regulations:

• Daily and possession limits are the same unless otherwise noted. Fish
are in an angler’s possession whether on hand, in cold storage, in
transport, or elsewhere.

Well, im sure there's a LOT of Minnesotans breaking the law by keeping fish in their freezers if that's the case.  Still doesn't seem right to me that I can't freeze fish and catch more legally, but whatever.
