Your top open water lake for catching Crappies
« on: Feb 27, 2006, 09:57 AM »
OK everyone, I do believe that it is now without a doubt over for the year.  So, focus is moving towards open water.  I hope to spend more time on the water this year.  I have always fished mostly ponds.  So, my lake knowledge is minimal.  Let's hear your favorite lake in Indiana or lower Michigan for catching Crappies.

I have heard stories about the HONEY HOLE. I have never been there, yet. HINT,HINT   There is a lake in lower Michigan called Indian lake near Kalamazoo that is tremendous for crappie and bass. It is somewhat private in that the only launch is in a church camp.

For magnum sized crappies, try Hamilton Lake in Steuben County. I have personally caught my biggest crappie ever there at 18 3/4 inches. I caught him in a bass tournament on a 1/2 ounce rattletrap. I weighed him on the tournament scales and he went 2 lbs. 11 oz. Unfortunately, at the time I did not have the money to mount him, so I ended up throwing him back. There are a lot of crappies in Hamilton, also. I don't know of a better lake in our area for crappies.

Crappie tend to cycle in the lakes.  I would agree that Hamilton is a great lake.  Some smaller lakes that can be hot are L.Turkey off of 700 south, and Ball Lake off of Bellefountain Rd.  One guy had a basket full of them last Spring when I was bass fishing there.  Down south, I hear Giest is an excellent crappie lake.  I've had several photos of crappie sent to me from that lake.

I will pass on the bass lakes, and keep those under my hat for now. ;D
When the bass season is over, there's nothing better than ice fishing!

Bellmont, check this thread out on www.crappie.com and it will give you some info on the fishing in NW Indiana for crappie. I really like Potato Creek State Park. It's not too far from South Bend.

I've caught a bunch of crappie in Ball but their average ran small.  Hamilton has some hawgs!  My two biggest crappie came from under the ice in Lake James and Fox Lake.  The one on James was 14 1/4 and the one from Fox was much bigger.  I gave that one away since it was the only fish I caught that night.

1.Clear
2.George
3.James
4.Snow
5.Messanger

All these lakes on the right day will provide you with some real nice fish.  Snow and James I always do best ice off.  As the year goes on the worse I do there.  Clear is good all year if you know where to go.  George is hit an miss but you can catch some real nice crappies.  Yogi

Patoka Lake produces some slabs. My old man and myself would go there every year in high school at tear them up!
