Vermont Pike Regulations ??
« on: Dec 06, 2017, 08:12 AM »
??? Have I mis-read the regulations or are Vt fishermen allowed to keep 5 20 inch pike?
Doesn't seem like good management to me.

that would be correct, they where origonaly considered a nusance species and had to be eliminated to protect an already dropping trout population. VT hasnt fully embraced pike as a trophy spies yet. NH's 1 pike over 28" makes much more sense for trophy fish. Honestly i put back an thing over 36" now any way to protect the breeders, but thats just my choice.

I agree.  NH's 1 fish over 28 inches is pretty restrictive but it does permit production of huge numbers of 24"- 40" pike.   Champlain regulations are way too liberal.  Shoot them, spear them or take dozens of 20" fish in a day of ice fishing with way too many tipups??   Pike are a wonderful fish and I love to eat them now that I find bone removal easy.
Just my feeling and I spend a lot of the year on the Inland Sea!

I would have thought the amount of toxins in the big ol pike would be enough to get people to let the big ones go. We release all of our pike unless they are gonna die due to a bad hooking. But I don't hold anything against people eating pike, rather that then seeing perch fisherman leaving them for the seagulls to eat. I hate a wasted fish. IF only they understood pike increase perch size ....wish more paid attention in biology class....
Its all fun and games until someone loses a walleye.......

The river down here.  ;D

39-1/2 15+ lb my PB

Pissed off Hawkeye because since he has been catching them I hadn't caught one over 28 and he had 3 in the 36-38 range.  I told him after his last one that if he caught another yard stick pike and I only caught a ruler pickerel I was stuffing him down the hole.

Nice fish, I let the big ones go.  If I get a 40+ I will probaly take some pictures and measurements and get a replica mount.  My fish being a 1/2" short saved me $800 ;D

  We've taken a few pike/pickerel hybrids from champlains.  They are beautiful fish but nothing that could compare to that  Tiger Musky.  We call the Champlain hybrids Tiger Pike?

I keep a lot of them and throw a lot of others back. Nothing is ever wasted.

I have no issues with the catch and release crowd, however I wish there would be less shaming of people who choose to eat some portion of their catch.
May the fish be with you.

Its a legal fish up to the "catcher" to decide whether to eat fish that night?
Personally, I think the smaller fish are tastier than trophies but to each his own.
