Where is first ice in New York state

In midstate usually the small bodies of water like Honeye lake or Conesus lake. But the way our winters have been who knows. Good luck be safe on new water.

It would seem to me (and this is just speculation) that the smaller lakes in the high peaks region of the Adirondacks would be first to freeze. If I were to plan an early trip for the sake of good ice I would probably consider something like Simond Pond off of Tupper Lake.  It has a reputation for being a great Pike spot.

Forecast shows making ice everyday after Thursday. Every small lake north of Rt.29A should be fishable by Dec.16.

Hopefully a week of good cold weather that is coming will get the small northern panfish ponds frozen over to be safe..

The smaller ponds in Madison county want to freeze over. Seen skim ice a couple of mornings the last couple weeks. First trip out on the ice last year was December 13, looks to be about the same this year.

I hardly ever tell anybody the location of my first fishable ice.....but when i do....its a lie!!! Lol. I got a few small shallow ponds near me that freeze fast. Until those are fishable for a few days i wont go try anywhere else. I just realized i never ordered bait.....i thought i was ready. Hopefully i didnt forget anything else!

I think by next weekend, there will be a lot of places to ice fish in NY and VT.  The weather forecast is looking good... let's hope the wind stays down and lets things firm up.

I hope so too, so sad to watch my early ice lake freeze over then thaw out....now for the final freeze.....should make it by christmas, Woot woot, what else can ya ask for these days :-)

No harm in keeping tight lipped but it would be horrible if somebody blindly followed "your word" without properly checking for themselves and went throughs

Canadice is one of the last places to freeze unfortunately

try out some smaller ponds in parks or something first. this will make sure you get all the kinks and dust out of your gear.. then check out the ponds west of rochester. also, honeoye lake, and dryden lake.... most of all, dont litter- and if you can, pick up any you see....and be safe..

my spot is thickening as we speak and plan on fishing the day after Christmas if there is 4" of black.  May the wind please  blow this snow off in the meantime!
