Islands Snow and Ice?
« on: Mar 16, 2017, 04:45 PM »
Hello Everyone,
I was just wondering how the ice on Carry Bay and The Gut is looking. I'm sure that it's plenty thick by now, but with all this snow, I want to know what Crayfish2 and I are getting into. Has it blown off any? All information on Ice/Snow conditions is very much appreciated! Thanks and have a GREAT weekend!   Tight Lines, PB.   :)

The only safe ice at the gut is in inner Hibbard Bay. Snow didn't blow off and I am told there is a lot of water under the snow making walking tough. I plan to check it out tomorrow but will be going out on show shoes. Open water in front of Camp Abnaki. Sketchy everywhere else in the gut. Not sure about the carry.

Yeah, Crayfish2 just told me about the poor ice conditions at the gut. It was almost completely open water not too long ago. I'm kind of making the assumption that Carry Bay is safe since people were fishing it before last weekend's cold snap. Looks like it was pretty breezy in the islands last night, so I'm hoping that the wind at least knocked some of the snow off of the lake. Won't be much fun walking through 18 inches of snow and 6 inches slush if it didn't though.  :(   Thanks for the updates guys!

Finding parking could be an issue everywhere. Not sure how far back the state pushed the snow at the carry to get off the highway and don't know if they cleared Knight Point State Park yet. Hopefully by the weekend things will be OK.

We'll have to bring a shovel to beat back the banks.

I've got a few hours free time tomorrow and hoping to go fish but no idea where and really don't want to fish solo.
Maybe Carry if anyone else is heading there I'd like to know.
Maybe Fairfield pond, or St. Albans bay, but haven't had a chance to get to the bay since the snow, anyone know if still fishing parts of the bay?

Keep an eye out for a Silver Nissan Titan if you head up to the islands tomorrow morning. We may be at Carry or Knights Point, depending on how the fishing is. Good luck tomorrow!

I understand they didn't plow the back part of knights point state park. Access to the gut/ Hibbard Bay is limited just to save you some time. Still open water between Knight point and Abnaki point.

Guys were fishing at Carry Bay into late afternoon today. I drove to back of plowed single lane @ Knight's point, only dog walkers. I did not see any jet trails, there were boot tracks down woods trail into back  of Hibbards. May be guys I've talked to who sell perch & travel light. These fellas gave me a bunch of pointers that helped me catch a lot of fish. If you're reading this... Thanks!

Carry Bay day with a real slow bite. Ice is great. Snow makes walking harder
Load it, Drive it, Park it
Bait it, Jig it, Hook it
Catch it, Clean it, Cook it
Simply put just get out/ and do it

People did get out to Hibbard bay from Knight Point Park. The snow pack is shrinking so walking is a bit easier. Pan fish bit OK not sure about tip up fishing.

Hit Carry Bay this morning. As LittleFishin said, a REALLY slow bite. Only a couple perch and bluegills. Sorry, nothing story worthy. Was an absolutely beautiful day on the ice!

Yeah I know! Even with a Sun Buff and Sunglasses on, I still got a tinge of a burn. White Snow + Strong Sun = Sneaky Sun Burns. Most people don't think about sun damage during the winter, but this time of year it's always a good idea to bring sun block. Wether you actually put it on is another story.  ;)

How are we looking in the islands right now? Hibbard, Keelers, Carry? Where are people getting on the ice if at all? Any information is much appreciated! Crayfish2 and I are hoping to get on the ice somewhere this weekend and the islands seem like the best bet with Trout season coming to a close tomorrow. Looking to get in one more ice fishing story before the lake opens up.Thanks in advance for any info and tight lines! PB

Please note that everything before my previous post is from last year!! Just reusing my old thread. We were dealing with a very similar situation ice wise around this time of year last year. ;D

We stayed on the gut 2 weekends ago. It was a long plank and quite a bit of honeycomb ice. The wind opened up a lot of water in just the time we were there. I can't imagine there is much left there at this point-
