I came up with a idea for the tail lights. I found some lights that you can recess and were only $5.50 each. I used a hole saw to cut a 4-1/2 inch hole and built a frame around the hole and mounted the lights with some stainless steel screws. In my shop I had some 1/2 inch thick plexiglass so I cut the plexiglass to size to fit flush with the wood frame and mounted the plexiglass to the frame with deck screws. I'm hoping this will protect the tail lights when I tip the shanty up.

Do you need a license plate on it because it is a trailer?  ???

Oh wow, that is perfect indeed. Only thing I would suggest is that you silicone the edges if possible. This will prevent any water from entering and freezing. But awesome thinking Beeler, good call.  ;)

I didn't know if I should seal it or not. But I think you're right, it might be a problem if I don't.

great idea .  if your hauling around on the ice with a quad u could use some kind of L bracket with ratchet or bungee straps on the roof or top side of the wall to haul gear around but if your just gonna use a truck then no need for that.   just a suggestion or an idea for someone else thinking about this design

It's been a while since I posted any pictures. Busy with Fall clean up around the house and setting up my Clam Kenai for the early part of the season. I also bought a 1999 SkiDoo Touring snowmobile for towing my Kenai and I was surfing the web to see if anyone towed a trailer with their snowmobile, I was hoping I could tow my TipDown. I was planning on putting skis under the wheels for easier towing.
Well, here is my door for the TipDown 2x2's for the frame and 1/2 inch insulation with shrink wrap. I used 3 hinges for the door and welded up a handle/latch for the door, but I need to paint the handle.  Next job is the inside.
I did take Quantumn's advice and siliconed the plexiglass for the tail lights.

Is there a bench seat or anything on the inside?

I plan on using 2 tri-pod chairs like this. I had them in my other shanty and they are comfortable.
Also building a small cabinet, will take pic when done. I tried the chairs but decieded to but a bench seat in, it was one less thing I have to set-up.

I have those 3 legged stools for my deer blind and it is like sitting on a stool and putting your grapes on a golf tee.....to make it more comfortable I use my "hot seat" to raise me up on the chair more and let everything sit as it should.

Nice shanty!

I used 1/2" insulation for the floor of the shanty. Then got the lights working but that was a pain in the a$$. Spent alot of time trouble shooting, because the lights were mounted on wood I had to take some wire and attach one end to the metal frame of the light and the other end to the trailer. Then everything worked great!!!
Because the lights are recessed one end of the light sticks out on the inside of the shanty. I didn't want anyone to kick the light so I built a frame around the light and covered it with 3/8" plywood.

A simple trap door using 2 hinges for each door and plastic wings to lock the doors in place. Also added velcro to hold the door up and applied 1 coat of spar varnish to each door.

Beeler, That is a very fine shanty in my opinion. Very well done and well thought out. If I ever build another hard side, it will be fashioned after yours.

Built a cabinet to hold my Marcum and Vexiler with the minnow bucket on the bottom. I used 3/4" x3/4" for the frame and 1/4" luan for the top, sides and middle shelf. I dadoed all the joints then used a staple gun and glue to assemble the cabinet. 1 coat of spar varnished was applied on the whole cabinet.

Beeler - I have been following your build since you started and must say that it turned out really nice. I have been kicking around the same concept ever since I saw one up in Minn. a couple of years ago that was used for spearing. I would like to utilize the shack to also carry my 4 wheeler so 1/2 the floor would fold down to use as a ramp. My concern has been that I want to start with a trailer that is wide enough to make it stable on the road when loaded with the quad. What size trailer did you use? Do you have any idea on the weight of you rig as it sits?
Again I want to commend you for your concept and craftsmanship.

The square tubing I welding on the trailer frame is 6 feet and that is the width of my shanty.
I used a 14 foot boat trailer to start off with.
As far as total weight as it is right now I get the number soon and post it.

Pulled my TipDown shanty to the junk yard that has a scale and it came in at 480 pounds.
Is this light or heavy? I can't compare it to anything.
I don't know if I can build one lighter, I was very careful not to over build.

I think that is pretty light for a wheeled shack. Some of the small 6x8 wheelhouses are at least double that. Most quads weigh more than that also. That would make your shack safe to use on early and late ice which to me is a big plus. I can't wait to see some pics of it out on the ice.
