Make sure there isn't any extra air going in which could mean gas dripping out. My Z51 is 9 years old and never has a problem.

Hi,

I have a pretty simple question on a 4 year old Z51... is there an idle adjustment screw?  I believe mine needs to be tweaked up a bit this winter.  Struggling to idle - low RPM compared to previous winters.  Will idle for about 15 seconds (without assistance), than die off.

Yes, Non-oxy gas and a splash of Seafoam each winter....

Thanks!

Not familiar with that model, but if its like the mako it should be at the end of your throttle linkage. Philips head screw with a spring on it. Clockwise to increase, counter to decrease.

Having trouble with mine too- can't find the sweet spot adjustment

Just installed a new fuel line kit with the grommet that goes into the gas tank- no more leaks

I adjusted the throttle screw and the idle screw as Eva told me but mine must be different bc it spins like crazy without even touching the throttle - I have a call in to Eskimo hoping they get back to me tomorrow with an answer on maybe some kind of direction to go with adjustment to get it to run right - may be in for a new carb according to the guy in the phone

Hanesie, is there a bit of slack in the throttle cable?

A treatise in mechanical engineering as equates to carburetors may be required.

The throttle butterfly vane contacts an idle screw when closed.

If not ~ the cable may be adjusted or has slipped and is now too short.

How is that so far, Hanesie?

Idahogator

I have been messing w both the throttle screw that adjusts that butterfly and the idle screw to find that sweet spot but can't seem to find a happy medium

I guess I need to identify what my starting point is from square one if I would want to start from scratch on throttle cable and idle screw adjustment

I had about 7 or 8 threads showing on the throttle nut above the bracket and Eva said that should have been around 3 showing so I adjusted that down and when I did that, my auger would spin so fast I couldn't hold onto it and that was without giving it any throttle at all-

I am trying to find out where that nut needs to be adjusted in correlation to the idle screw in the top of that butterfly as well- and it's frustrating to the point where I'm ready to get rid of it and buy a new auger

Be patient and we'll get.

One thing at the time:  Do you have the proper manual?

If so, in the section on carb replacement, should be the "Initial" settings.

New item, you said it runs too fast after turning that butterfly valve screw.  So, did you turn it counterclockwise. If not do so until it does not touch the metal, meaning the valve is totally closed.

Check that and get back with what you found.    ;)2

Let's try one more thing.

Take off parts until you can see the butterfly valve down in the carb.

Work the throttle while looking to see if it closes completely.

If not, turn the screw that's keeping it open until it closes.

If the valve does not close, is the throttle trigger fully released and a bit of slack.

Awaiting your reply.

Having issues with my Mako.(12 years old)  Seems to lose power as I drill. Pulled the carb off and cleaned it out (wish it was the old school with the float and bowl instead of the new version). Ran great after the cleaning for about 2 or 3 holes then started bogging again. Going to replace the tank cap with the self venting since my screw fell out of mine and I put a bolt in.  Going to pull the fuel filter from the tank and install a new one and replace spark plug. Seems to be burning a ton of gas too. Have gone through 5 tanks of gas and maybe drilled about 200 holes. Exhaust seems to be more smokey than normal and plug is a little more black than I remember.  Using premium non ethanol gas 50:1 with seafoam mixed in.

Hey guys I need your help. I just bought a new Eskimo Shark Z71 71cc  ice auger. I started it for the first time and she took right off with no problems. Second pull and off she went. After letting it warm up for a bit. I pressed the throttle to test her out. Weird thing is when I let go of the throttle ,  as the flute comes to a stop the Auger makes a weird almost clutch like noise. Is that normal? I've also noticed oil/fuel mixture coming out of the  black decompression button. I was wonder if that was normal also. The auger is 3 days old.

Easy way to get it back ~ Find the place in your profile "Set-up", then copy mine and paste it in your area.     ;)2

Proud new member here from upstate NY.  My new Mako arrived this afternoon.  I had some pre-mix ready and she fired up in three pulls.  :-)
Can I add the FOEAO badge to my sig?

Welcome Bob and congrats on the new "MO".

Add away with that red logo.    ;)2

Have you read back a few pages on good fuel mix ratios ?  And how to keep corn-gas out of all small engines?

Hi Tom,

Funny story about the fuel mix ratios...  As I waited for my Mako to arrive, I downloaded the manual for it from the Eskimo website (I'm one of those rare guys who loves to read instruction manuals).  It listed a 25:1 mix, with a 20:1 mix for 20 hours of break-in.  This struck me as odd, but I went ahead and mixed up a gallon of 20:1.  When the auger arrived, it had a tag on the fuel tank filler advising the use of 50:1 mix.  The manual stated the same.  I guess I'll have to add another gallon of gasoline to my gallon of premix!

I live in a very small town in a rural area but we do have a gas station that sells non-ethanol-laced high-test.

I bought the Mako to fill in for my 30-year-old OPE Magnum III 33cc auger that I bought new somewhere around 1986.  I'll get her fixed up and retire her to back-up duty.  :-)

Tight lines,
Bob

I tried to use the instructions you posted to include the FOEAO logo, but they don't seem current.  They seem to refer to the controls on the page for posting a message, but not to the "modify profile - forum profile" page.

Tight lines,

Nice you're up on the non-ethanol gas.

I mix Amsoil Saber 2 cycle synthetic lubricant for my Mako. The first batch was at 75:1 for one small tankful, Then 80:1, even though Amsoil says it's formulated to be used at 100:1. And it's guaranteed.

I'll try to update the FOEAO thingy and will let you know when it's done.

Hi guys(and maybe gals) just found this thread. I am currently in the market for an auger, just sold my Pro 4 thank god, and I'm currently torn between the Z51 and Rocket F1. Any info on these two to help me with the choice I'd appreciate. Thanks!

Can't say anything about the F1 but I have a Z51 and it has worked for me flawlessly for over 8 years. As with any gas auger only use non-ethanol fuel and a good Oil. True Fuel I guess is a good choice. http://trufuel50.com/
I have heard good things about the F1 also. I switched this year to a drill and Russian hand auger and couldn't be happier. I will keep the Z51(maybe) and I also have a Silvertip 6" hand auger.
