Title: Wheel House Generator marking?
Post by: Agronomist_at_IA on Dec 06, 2017, 10:37 PM
So last year I just ran my generator away from the house with an extention cord. I got thinking........with being out on the ice does anyone take and mark it with a flashing light or a pole and light so nobody hits it or drives over it at night?

With wheelers, snowmobiles, trucks, and sometimes intoxicated drivers..........loosi ng the generator would really suck.

Anyone mark there generatorr? If so how?

I've got a flashing orange dome light  that plugs into a cig lighter/power outlet. Was thinking about moding a plug in for it to run it of the generator

I don't have much experience around those parts of the world, but what I have seen, everyone runs them within 8ft or so of their shanty..

I know a caveman, ran the light from generator power, which somehow stopped running, the light obviously went out and a DUI imbecile ran over and destroyed said unit.

I would suggest reflective tape on the generator AND on a tall pole.     ;)2

Good point! Running the warning light off the generator probably isn't the best idea.
But reflective tape on a pole should work well.
I have large rolls of blue, red, white, and Orange reflective tape by 3M in my shop but it's a long way from Iowa.lol
It is certainly a good idea to mark it.
Too many idiots out there who would run it over.
They do make electric flashing lights that run on batteries and some are rechargeable. Got one from the safety fair at work a few years back that they called an electric road flare. But as was said if it fail while your sleeping it could be bad.
Reflective tape can't run out of power.

Reflective spray paint and some creative tape/stencil work. Mark both the house and generator with something distinct. In daylight those paints give a subtle matte appearance. Under headlights lights they pop. Maybe add some strontium based paint to keep stuff glowing after a day in the sun?

Clam makes a red flashing safety light.  http://stores.clamoutdoors.com/clam/shelter-safety-lights.html

A couple of driveway markers would probably do the trick too.

I have a couple of the yellow flashing lights that attatch to construction barracades. They work well for this, but my genny stays in the bed of my pickup. If someone wants to find me on a lake at night I light em up to make it easier.
