Fishing with good friend Paul from Ausable Forks. 13" black ice, south basin. 10 tipups, 3 flags, no fish, but jigging was hot, 3 keeper Lake Trout, biggest 22", 4 shorts, 5 lost at the hole. I think my tipups are going to stay at home, jigging for me!

fished on schroon yesterday.7 trout from 15 to 25 one salmon 18 30 smelt 5 perch.a little slow.tc5

we were on schroon sat. great day,8 lakers one salmon and dozens of smelt. 2 lakers came off my jig rod with a little halie.i'll be back out tomorrow!

ive only fished schroon a few times we had luck with the lakers and perch . what do you guys mean u caught smelt? jigging for them? or in a trap? i mostly fish otseigo for lakers we use hunts there my dad fished schroon every weekend and used smelt but cant get them anywhere now a days would like to catch some next time i go up there keep slaying the lakers guys good job

You can catch smelt on Schroon jigging Hali's and a small grub, mostly over deeper water. Electronics really help.

how deep are the smelt? how far off bottom should i jig? do u tip jigs with spikes?

Cant say we caught any trout like others but the smelt cloud was 3/4 deep in the column using a vex.. They were easy to catch.. Hali perch color jig with spikes.. Spring tip works well as they bite lite..

small jigs with grubs hali or a small pimple.pimples seem to hold the lakers better when and if you hook one up.you might find them any where from 0 to 100.tc5

Caught two ll salmon the other day about three feet down. Got em on hunts. Going out tomorrow. Hunting for lakers!! Trying to figure out how to post pics from my phone, not having any luck lol

Fished south basin today, one keeper sized laker, on icicle 8ft under ice, returned, picked up tipups at 12:30, then drove snowmobile around jigging for lakers, lookers but no takers. Fun

We used to jig for perch on the sunken island, bass in summer. Occasional laker. Drops off like a cliff, wonder what electronics would show????

Are you talking about sunken island just north of eagle ? An easy pin point is off shaw hill rd. Its hit and miss out there.

don't think it matters what color your dropping when jigging for smelt,they bite on any color,its the hook and whats on it. i've gotten hundreds using just about ever color. the hali's with the smaller chain and hook works best.

Used to fish the suken island all the time. It always seemed to be pretty good for lakers the first couple weeks after good ice and then the action would drop right off. Have not been out there in a couple of years, but that was my experience. Once saw a guy catch about a 12 pound northern in 80 FOW on the north side of the isalnd. Would not have believed it except he did it right in front of me. Can be a great smallmouth spot in the summer if you can be there at the crack of dawn.

That spot I told you about continues to be HOT!!

would love to get up there again though its nice to not worry about pressure cracks or thin ice... and dont get me wrong pickeral are fun to chase flags all day but i was looking forward to a trout dinner.

X2 It's kind of like hunting, would you rather hunt state land that's pounded by hunters, or private land that you have pretty much to yourself. Think of how Schroon is fished in the winter, there are areas that are pounded every day, while prime areas are virtually left unfished.

Fished Schroon for the first time last Saturday with my son. Used small shiners on tip ups and wax worms for jigging.
He got three lakers on jigging and we got three more on tip ups.
Had a blast and the fishing was awesome.
Will go back again next time I get put there for a visit.

Public parking at the old Narrows restaurant. there are no signs, just look for the docks stacked in front. The is a walking road that goes down to the lake. No fishing today TC5, I'm thinking Tues.

That spot we talked about, where your job is, when we fished that area we would kill the lakers in close early on, but as the season progressed our action got further and further out each time we went. By the end of the season all our action was in 70+ fow..

Should be around 40 by Sat, twenties at night. We've got weeks left on Schroon. 17-20" black ice

From what I see in the long range forecasts lots of thirties during the day and twenties at night, with a forty degree day here and there, no reason to think ice will remain good till 20-25 of March. I think I'm done on LG, if I get out it will be back to my salmon spot.

Thanks. This has become such a great salmon ice fishing season. I have heard of so many multiple salmon catches this year that I'm starting to think Schroon may becoming the premier ll salmon fishery in the Adirondacks, if this continues. Time will tell.

You didn't miss anything after you left. I stayed & still had no flags. More smelt though. Nice talking to you out there. Plenty of time for talk since it was so slow. Gotta take the hat off tomorrow though. Sun burnt w/ a white section covered by the hat.

loon lake is sucking this year. it got pounded the last few years when george didn't freeze over. i live a mile from loon and i won't waste my time.

soom of the shore line is starting to open up but theres still alot of places to get on. we had atv's out yesterday off of eagle point. no problems . was still 16 inches of good solid ice. going back this morning!

I wasn't out today but I got to believe most of the shoreline is fine. Been cold as all getout lately, single numbers this morning, highs in the twenties, still have plenty of snow on the shorelines which helps keep the ice good.

We also have done well this week on Schroon.16 lakers in the blizzard on Tuesday and 12 lakers and a pike on Weds.All on tipups between three of us.Ice should hold up for a couple more weeks with this weather!

Nice pike bait box!!That was one of the darkest pike I think I have ever seen. :o And to eat a little bait just under the ice was awesome to witness first hand. Just goes to show that when you think you got the fish figured out it throws you a curve. The ice is thick and lakers seem to be getting a little bigger. Hopefully another couple days next week if it all works out. Going to be a while before I start hiking the raddison around by the looks.

i had a decent day on schroon this morning. iced 4 lakers 3 keepers and lost about 5. they started hitting first thing,all on a green and white hali tipped with grubs and a gold 1 inch pimple tipped with grubs.

Started out hot and heavy and just stopped 6 trout on the ice in an hour and lost that many more.Smelt were down there but they were tite liped.Tc5

We were fishing the narrows, tip-ups set for Salmon, we got 1 laker 8' under the ice. we also iced 22 smelt. Jon ny got a salmon yesterday & a laker.

Jon & I have been fishing Schroon a lot I was there yesterday w/wec we each got a laker. Today it was back to just Jon & me, jon caught 2 lakers jigging, 1 was about 12" the other was about 19-20". I caught 1 on a tip-up bait ws 8' under the ice looking to get a Salmon. Mine was 27".

Yup, the same spot, as a mater of fact, I was using your same holes. I never got the dril out, you could kick the holes open, & I caught that 1 in your last hole toward shore.

That certainly is a nice laker. Going south of where we were on Saturday, down where a brook comes out to the lake, just north of eagle point on the east side. Good luck tonight. Maybe we can arrange a trip on Wednesday or Thursday.

The ice wasn't real bad it was the shorelines.By the time we got off Tuesday afternoon the shore was all broken up.Decided not to push the envelope on Wed.
