What Size Hole?????
« on: Jan 23, 2008, 11:46 PM »
I have a 32" by 34" hole cut into mine and I would like to know what size hole you guys have because I have seen them way smaller than mine but I like the extra room to see the fish coming. What Size Is Your Spearing Hole :-\

24" front to back long, 36" left to right wide. I like the extra width more than the length.

Going out to make my hole tomorrow. It'll be about 2'x5.5' I've got a Frabil Hideout portable that I'll be using.

Mine is 24" wide by 36" long. I sit on the narrow end with my back to the wall of my house, This way when I pull up a fish I can shove it right out my spring loaded door and get it out of the house before it flops off the spear or slimes up the entire house.

The Bighorn River starts in Wyoming and flows into Montana where it meets up with the Yellowstone River.

I know where that is, my friend used to work at the clinic on the reservation and lived in Hardin. When we visited her, we went to see where Custer last crapped his pants :roflmao:

Just curious if you drill a couple of holes and then use the icesaw on them or do you link them together with the auger ???. Here in the Interior of Alaska, it's easier to just use a chainsaw with a big bar for the thick ice we get. I've seen roughly 4x4 holes up here.

That's cause you need them that big so you can get out those monsters  I drill 4 holes and then use a hand saw, I have a chain saw it just is not needed when you only have 8" of ice.

I always used a 2'X4" hole.
I always beveled the ice under my hole so as to allow for a good view.

We were in a 8 X 16 shanty on Black Lake with a 4' X 16' hole. It was big enough to do laps in. Looked down that hole for 2 days and all we saw were 5" perch... and not very many of them.

5 8" auger holes staked 2X3, then smoothed out with a spud and tappered a bit on the bottom.

Approx 18"x36" drill 4 corners with 8" auger and finnish with the ice saw.
The saw just seems to make less of a mess and I get less wet that way.
Works for me on Alaska's Beautiful Kenai Peninsula. I have cut 2' with the saw but could cut deeper if I had too. Also hard to beat a good set of ice tongs as when the ice gets thick it is often too buoyant to shove under.

With the open floor 6'x6' tent I go with 2'x3'.  With the hard floor house with a 2'x3' floor opening I go with 30"x42" for more view outside the hole area. Plus it takes longer for that hole to freeze in from the sides and eventually need trimming again. The ice saw is great for re-opening the hole on my permanent house. No flying ice chips, water and floating slush to deal with all over the house. Just a couple sheets of ice to toss out the door. The ice saw is worth its weight in pike~!  :)

My dad made a house about 10 years ago and it had a 4x 3 1/2 hole.  The nice thing he added to that was he made a V where your feet are so you dont have to bend over to see what is under you.  He was a smart man.

I love the  smell of fresh Pike Slime in the morning.
