Maybe thats because it's kind of hard to spear on open water. ;) ;D

We were waiting on you to bring up a subject.  ;)

Now that the spearing season is almost upon us, I'm sure the Darkhouse Spearing Section will be a regular hub of excitement.

Old reliable redheaded Dueys decoy along with some chunks of smelt and crushed crab shells.  Yep, been thinking about it since last spring.

what type of wood are you carving out of?  is it as simple as it looks , is it difficult to find  the balance point/ place weights/ find paint that stands up to the abuse???

i ask this since i've not tried it before  :-\

I used rough cut pine 7/8 inch thick printed a pic of a blugill off the internet sized it to what I thought was a good size(big bait big fish) cut out the profile traced the outline on the board and cut it out with a jigsaw I think a coping saw would do a finer job but i was in a hurry after cutting out the rough design i used a belt sander to thin down the fin areas and to give the piece a curved shape so when the decoy is jigged it swim in a circle this could also be done with metal fins.  I used a dremel to thin down the fin areas more and give them the spine appearance also used the dremel to waller out the belly of the fish for the weight. I found this info on the internet but cant remember where:  the width of the hole should be 1\2 the decoy thickness,  the depth of the hole should be approximetly 1/3 the the total height of the decoy(side view)and the length of the hole approx. 1\4 the length of the decoy but can be longer if needed , and the hole should start just behind the front fins , but the piece of wood and its chacteristics must be taken into consideration also when you are comfortable with the size of hole ::)  :o :o :oI fill the hole with molten lead and let cool then I give it its first water test I use a small eye screw shown in the picture and adjust from there this is a trial and error situation I like to try to get the eye screw toward the front of the decoy to provide forward movement when jigging also lead can be drilled out or added as needed after getting the decoy to balance properly let dry and then I used JB weld to smooth up the bottom I prefer to use a five minute epoxy but had none then sand , prime and  paint hope this helps  ;D
