Hey just wondering if anyone knows any tricks of keeping the spear hole from freezing over? I was thinking about lining the edges with bublers but dont know how well it would work. Any advice would be nice
-
Do you mean while you are spearing or when you leave for the night?

When i leave for the night.

I think it would probably work. Another thing to consider is covering the hole w/ cardboard or an old piece of foam. You will still have to chip off ice, but it won't be as thick

Leave a propane heater on pilot.
HA.....HA......HA..... ..I can see it now, the pilot light goes out and the propain keeps coming you step in and light a match and KABOOOOOM  then your standing there with all the sides of the shanty lying down with a sign saying "WHAT THE HE!L WAS THAT ALL ABOUT" kinda like the road runner :woot:
I need to do something about my spearing hole too because that 3 and 4 inch crap is for the BIRDS :%$#!: . I think I'm going to make an insulated door that goes over the hole :-\

Think about what happens when you put a board over the hole. The water is 32 degrees, right. How cold is the air? Say 20 degrees. If you stop most of the 20 degree air from reaching the water you are going to keep the freezing to a minimum. Your board needs to fit tight to work best.

I use a home made lp stove that I keep on low 24/7. Uses about 20# gas a week, 20 below this am and 1" of ice on hole. never has the stove go out.
