What's A Keeper To You?
« on: Jan 14, 2009, 02:19 PM »
What's a keeper size crappie to you? And what kind do you catch?

We normally keep them 10" and up. (rarely get one over 12") and we catch mostly white crappie with a few blacks a year.

I say your in the right ballpark, under 10 there's not much to them, but I've seen some "great Pa. "crappie fishermen with 8 inchers on the ice to each his own.Crappie10,gill 8 1/2,perch 9inches that just me.

10 and up for sure, used to keep smaller ones in years past but only the ones on the bigger side, much easier to clean!!!

look at it this way if you get them at 9-9 1/2 that is the size of a decent sunfish............... ..........I usually throw anything back that is under 10" we get them on a small lake around here that push 18" the 14-16 inchers bite a lot so it is not uncommon for use to catch the mosters............... pulled a 17 1/4 outta the hole last winter and the biggest so far this year is 15 nothing is going on the wall until I get me one of them 18 inchers

Usually get them around 11" - 12" so I pretty much keep them if I get a couple of em so I can make a snack when I get home from fishing.

Usually 10"+ but have one small lake where those a little over 8" have more meat than most 10"s from bigger waters

in ny, the legal length is 9 inches and a daily limit of 25. remember a 9 in crappies shrinks a little after it dies so watch keeping them 9 inchers.

Keep 10" to 13" for eaters. The 14"+'ers go back for breeding stock.

That's great! but a 10-13"er is a better breeder than a 14"er. That's like a 30 year old woman verses a 50 year old woman. Younger will produce a healthier baby.

Thats one heck of a sunfish. Wish we had them around here. I caught a few 9"ers in MN last year but have yet to get one over 8 3/4" here.

LOL I do that all the time. If were trolling for walleyes and not doing any good I will search with the fish finder untill i find a school of gills and park right on top of them and bring out the ice rod with a jig and waxie. Caught a few 14" crappies last year like that.

Just remember that you 12" and up are usually your factory females and it's vital to put those fish back to ensure a good spawn, of course if you get one that you want mounted by all means it's a keeper.

I throw them all back! ;D  I don't want the guilt of being part of the reason for them becoming an endangered species!

Otherwise,...I would keep them, if they fit on a bun!,...Besides you can't get fresher fish, anywhere, than at your neighborhood grocery store.
