Keeping bait down in swift current

(1/1)

blackmer826:
How does everyone keep their bait down in swift current with tipups? My bait is not staying down close enough to the bottom. I am thinking of getting a 3 way swivel and tying on a big weight then giving my bait like a foot or two of line....my only fear is the fish feeling all the weight when they take the minnows.

RapShack:
What are you using to set your depth?  Those clip on weights are worthless in current.  If you've got sonar you need to drill a sighting hole straight down stream of the hole where you plan to set your tipup.  The distance will vary based on current, depth, and weight of your rig.  Set your machine to the widest beam and crank the gain and you should be able to find it and use that to set your depth.  If you're running trebles you could switch to a lead jig head, that will keep the bait from blowing around as much.

use a bank sinker or large egg sinker and set it up lindy rig style.
