Have I seen years where the ice was thick enough to fish in mid-October and remained safe until mid-April. I live about an hour north of Anchorage. The fellows up north around Fairbanks have a longer ice-time. I have paddled a canoe aroung partially frozen lakes in May, but never ventured on the ice. I felt safer in the canoe for some reason.
