Knot question
« on: Oct 31, 2007, 03:03 PM »
What knot do you use to attach your jigs to your line?
Some jigs have large enough eyes to use a Palomar knot.
But when the eye is too tiny....what knot do you use?

If I cant easily tie a palomar knot, then improved clinch is my second choice

Improved clinch all the way for me on my jigs at the end of the rod.
Leaders on my tip ups get surgeon's loops, interlocked.

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

I use an improved clinch all of the time.  maybe just because it's the one I grew up using but it seems to work well.  good fishing

For jigs also try the rapala knot or the nonslip loop knot for that extra bit of dangle and dance on your jigging action.

I have started to use a kwik clip. The jig has it's action, then I can change easly without tying again, with power pro line.  :)

I've used the clips but most of the little jigs that I use,(#12 or 14) I can't get the clip through the eye.
Shut up and fish.

I myself like the palomar knot- It's easy to tie, fast, and I don't think I have ever had one fail me.

Usually palomar knot but most smaller jigs where it can't be done have no eye (like myself  ;) ) so I pass the line thru the hole in jig, twist a few times and put the loop around hook shank, then pull tight. Here is a great animated knot link that has been on here recently

Wow thats a cool webpage- saved that one to the favorites fishing folder.

I've also gone to using the quick clips but there are situations where tying direct is beneficial, especially when knot placement on the eyelet makes the jig hang properly.  When I can't use a palomar I like the uniknot, which can be cinched down tight or left up a little for a loop.

For small hooks, I use Cabela's No-Knot Fast Snaps.  I have used them fly fishing on size 14 and 16 hooks.

I use the uni knot pretty much exclusively. Never had a knot slip or break. The line will break somewhere away
from the fish sometimes but never at the knot if you tie it properly and lubricate it when you slide it tight.
Plus when you use small jigs like the Genz bug, you can slide the knot toward the rear to make it a more horizontal presentation.

I would probably use a palamar if I could get the line thru the eyeas it holds jigs horizontal but I usually have to settle for an improved clinch knot or use a fas snap.

i like the improved clinch knot for lite line and flies. For jigs, balances, marmooksa's and such i like the loop knot or palomar.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

has anyone ever lost a fish using a kwik clip on larger gamefish such as lakers or muskie? im considering using them but question thier durability. would be great to change lures while jigging in the cold!

Sorry guys....I just  Googled kwik clips and should have Googled  Fast Snaps.
Being over 50  Cableas Fast Snaps are a real find. My eyes not being  what they
were when younger. Now I'll be able to tie a "Fast Snap" on  and not have to
tie more knots through out the day.  This is one great bunch of guys.
Thanks again.   Chuckles

Improved Clinch Knot, or regular Clinch Knot.

These knots "wrap" around themselves, giving you a "tab" of sorts for a firmer grip on the line, when you center the knot to keep your jig presentations horizontal under ice.

I use a duncan loop, stonger than the improved clinch knot IMO. But the improved clinch knot isn't bad either.
