I like St. Croix rods.  I have an ultra light and a medium light.  I am not sure which model I have, but they are both 28 inches with the carbon handle (not cork)  Caught a lot of fish on the UL and just got the ML this year.  Both very senstive with good backbone.  I don't use the St. Croix reels, I usually find a decent small spinning reel and match it.  For line, I am trying out fireline ice crystal in 3lb and 8lb test.  So far I like it, but we shall see when I go fishing with my friends who use different line.
For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.

I would choose something like a st.croix UL. Its a good weight, lots of feel. But dont use a st.croix reel, put on a small shimano or a Tica Cetus reel. I wouldnt use anything more than 4# test line. Keep it light and just loosen the drag off for bigger fish.

Ugly stick makes a great all around rod but works best for smaller fish. and being not to expensive i think its a great buy!

sewing thread works great. A few break offs, but the increased bites are well worth it.

Rods, I use St.Croix Legends. I started using Sufix Ice Magic last year and love the stuff. It comes in neon tangerine or clear. I use the 3lb. because it is so thin I can get away with it. It stays limp and is VERY strong.

I use a ugly stick 30" med. with 3lb test cajun red line. I hold the line with one hand and jig with the other to detect bites. I would say get a hi vis line that wont show up in the water to detect strikes.

Almost all of my open water rods are St. Croix (fly, spinning, baitcast,) but my ice rods are cheapies like Shakespeare and Berkely Lightning.  I use Shimano Spirex and Cardinal reels spooled with Berkely Micro Ice line in 2, 4 and 8 lb test.

St. Croix Legends - they are worth the money. The reel is as important - I make sure there is no slap in the bail and is smooth. I wouldn't skimp on my open water equipment so I certainly wouldn't go on the cheap for ice fishing - afterall it is my favorite season.

When it come to fishing line I personally am in what seems like an eternal search for a line that has all of the characteristics I am looking for - this year I am using Fireline Crystal and it has been fine. I just bought some sufix Ice Magic and respooled a couple of rods with it so we'll see.

Whatever feels right to you is what you should go with.

Good luck!!

i just picked up a "cajun ice" combo made by shakespeare. got it at dick's sporting goods for $15. and it's rapidly becoming my favorite! the rod's great, the reel's great, and even the line is great. it comes pre-spooled with 4# red ice line. perfect for slabs! i'm gonna get me a couple more in fact   ;D
