I hope you like to eat trout...cuz it looks like the slammer has a 100% mortality rate.  I would probably jig with hair jigs/spikes or egg imitations myself, if we had a place to icefish for L.O. run trout in NY.

It looks more to me like hunters08's GAFF has about a 100% mortality rate and I sure would be eating 5 pound browns and steelies. FIRE UP THE GRILL!

Gaffing big rainbows and browns when ice-fishing is a common practice where allowed.

With a Slammer Tip-Up and a suspended bait, most fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth or upper jaw. When slack-line floater-bait rigging in current, yes, they can take the bait down their throat. But one little #6 or #8 single hook or #16 treble down the throat is NOT going to cause that much blood.

Unless he's using 7/0+ sized hooks, all that blood is either from a gaff hook, bullet wound, or intentionally bleeding the fish (especially hens with spawn inside).

You can easily see where my buddy gaffed this fish which got wrapped up in the line and came in goofy.

It's much better to do a nice solid neck shot.

Hey hunters08 - Get an eye shot on that hook-jawed male brown or what?? You're not shooting those fish with a .22 are you?  ;)

Gotta ask what is the limit on steelies there, because in that one pic i counted 10. That's just crazy. I only ask because here in NY it's a 1 steelhead limit.

Those bows look like footballs. WOW :o :o Very, Very. Nice :flex:
Question, since you are fishing with a jigging rod I am assuming you can only use two(i.e. two hand helds in NYS.....I am assuming you caught those bows in NYS)

There are a couple of threads about this ... Slammers are considared tip-ups/ traps in new york state (5) allowed with name and address. Slammers have an audible alarm (slam) when set off.

When that picture was taken, the Michigan inland lake limit was 5 fish per day (it is now 3). That was a two person limit that went to the smoker. Days like that are rare, but later that season, two buddies and I landed 18 fish in about an hour and a half and took home 15.

In NY you are allowed one steelhead in the tributaries...... But if you are fishing the lake or a bay you can 3.  there are certain mile markers or bridges or different things that are considered the beginning of where the  tributary regs take effect.

mine is a homeade version i no that it works because i have caught pickeral and perch on it but no the trout.  one question when you set the slammer up is the line tight tp the bait or do you give the fish line to run a couple of feet before going off

this trigger is really sensitive.  a little tap from a perch can trip it off

I had a feeling it wasnt the kit. You should order the kit for 13 bux !! the way your trigger goes in the eye i would guess the trigger is the problem. I honestly doubt a 4 inch perch could steal bait from my slammer with out being hooked.I have never had bait stolen or ever missed a trout with my slammer 100% success(you would think i had stock in the slammer kit)I dont but i do love the "SLAMMER KIT"

MA Bass Fishing's device is basically what we call a SPOOLER (because you can get the line spooled off your reel without it releasing from the trip-wire). A couple of similarities in that there's a rod and reel with a drop away arm holding the rod under tension, but it's definitely NOT a Slammer.

I am sold on the slammer.  I have never had any luck with trout on tip ups it looks like this is the answer.  Has any body ever use them for pike fishing.
