Title: Blue Perch
Post by: ChrisinSTJVT on Feb 02, 2008, 04:45 PM
Caught this today jiggin. It's not very big but pretty cool. Read about these on here before but never saw one myself. The guy I fish with has never seen one either. Wish I had the camera with me on the ice cause these pics don't do the color of it when it first came out of the water justice.

I caught one in Dec. and thought it was strange too. They are rare to catch for sure. I talked to a professor at State of Minnesota he's doing a study on them and is looking for slime samples and or the entire fish. So if you have'nt fried it yet, you may want to check out Bluewalleye.com, there is contact info and sampling instructions. He claims the slime is blue in color, I did'nt know and did'nt notice any blue color. The cool thing is he's a fisherman and a scientist looking out for our sport.

Thanks Steve and Jay. I will be sure to check that site out. I actually froze the fish whole in water as I plan on doing a multi perch mount and want this fish to be part of it. We have caught literally thousands of perch from this lake over the yrs and have not seen anything like this before. Yeah I know the pic quality sucks I took them on our DV recorder and there doesn't seem to be much for a still pic menu.

Yes just dropped it off yesterday. The taxaderimist was so interested in it that he said he would start on it right away and have it done by first of april. Thought that was pretty decent of him and he said he would do both sides so it could be set up however I want later. Most places around here are 6mths to a yr.

That's a rare catch- I wouldn't be ashamed keeping or mounting that. Nice fish-I've been waiting for one of them myself and chances are it will never happen. That will be a pretty mount with other perch with it.

This fish was caught in northern VT.
Believe me I am not ashamed about keeping it.
I think the point is it's a BLUE PERCH I don't think it matters much wether it's 7" or 17".
Thanks I can't wait to see it mounted also.

There is a lake near kalkaska Michigan that about every 4th or 5th perch is blue. They are useally smaller than the average fish out of that lake and I seem to catch more on the ice than in the summer. Still a cool fish, But not very rare where I fish. RB

This is a gentic mutation sort of like albinoism. The animal doesn't produce a certain pigment and the result is a blue color.

yellow is the one rarer than blue for lobsters.  Rarer yet are albinos

Post by: terry fish on Jan 12, 2011, 02:09 PM
Ya know, I have been sitting here thinking about this blue perch. Perch are yellow and green as we all know. We also know that all things have certain pigmentation characteristics within our gene pool depending on the species. The fact that a blue perch lacks yellow in some, and lacks green in all tells me that the yellow part of the gene is missing in some of these fish, because if ya know your primary colors you will understand that it takes yellow and blue to make green. So a blue perch in my opinion is just lacking yellow in its pigment makeup. I also understand that things exposed to high amounts on nitrogen can become blue-ish in color like a blue spruce, thus negating the yellow from green leaving blue.   That's my take on that.

Yeah i knew it was some other really odd color not green. Ive never even heard or seen of an albino lobster.

the blue crawfish are rare but the blue perch are not as rare in certain lakes.  its in the fertility of the water and the genetics of the fish.  such as there are different shades of blue gills and sunfish and different shades of catfish crappies and bass.  there are yellow bass white bass.  even large mouth bass look different in certain waters ive caught them where they look almost all green in one lake then almost white and grey in another.  we even see this color event in duck hunting some more vibrant then others and some very drab and no its not just the plumedge i know young birds are drab but ive shot old drake mallards that were very pail in there coloring even seen pike with very faint spots and others were so dark and beautiful so my 2 cents say its genetics and water fertility
