Ice Shack Build: Start to finish
« on: Oct 28, 2014, 01:57 PM »
Here are some pictures of a shack my buddy and I built last year. We took a slighly different approach than most, we went for comfort and ammenities over weight. Take a look and let me know what you think. Here are some of the specifics: 8' x 12' w/ custom steel trailer frame, 3600lbs total weight, sleeps 4 to 5, satelite with 42" tv, 12v dc solar system and 120v system with generator, ceiling fan, indoor/outdoor speakers & subs, outside lighting on every side and remote controlled spotlight, full kitchen with running water, stainless counters, 4 burner stove/oven with rangehood and microwave.

3600 lbs?!  Holy crap.

I'm going light and cheap, with no gadgetry, unfortunately I have to contend with an annual plague of shack break ins and thefts.

That's a pretty serious battery set up you have.  How big of a solar panel do you use to charge it all?  How long does it take to do a full recharge?  How long do the batteries last?

All in all, that looks like something you could live out of for a month, I like it. ;D

It sits up off of the ice quite a ways! Do you just use hole sleeves?? I imagine some of the weight is floor insulation, but don't you have some sort of skirting for it?? But it does look livable!! ;D

We have two solar panels mounted on an old satelite arm so we can set to the right angle. Solar panels are cheap and undersized and dont work that well in the winter. We also have a battery charger that runs when the generator is going. We could run basic 12volt lights and radio for a couple of days or so without any problems on one charge.

We dont have any holes on the inside do all the fishing with tip-ups. Floor is insulated well enough and a 10,000 btu vented heater keeps it warm enough so no skirting required.

We have to keep road plowed out to it all year long so we dont have any issues taking it off in March. Had it on the pond for over 3 months last winter!

So basically it isn't an ice fishing shack, rather a shack for ice fishing. ;D Looks well set up, but you could have just bought a used camper trailer! IMHO.....

Yeah we thought about going to camper route but bulding one from scratch is more fun and gave us more flexibility to add in all the extra details. We also had allot of the building materials on hand.

That looks VERY well thought out.  I wish we had the ice for something like that down here.
