How deep are you jigging for Bluegill ?
« on: Jan 11, 2009, 08:56 PM »
Last winter I found many nice blueill in 7' to 12' relating to weeds.  This winter, they are not in that area and I had to move out to 16' or so to find the good ones.

In general, how deep do you find your quality bluegill?

Thank you in advance.

I tried in vain to catch some big gills today in a MA stocked trout pond. I found them on the Aqua-Vu  in 18'-20' depths over green weeds.  The cold front seemed to shut them down; also I find the 9-10" bulls are among the wariest gamefish around  :)

In one lake I may fish 18 inches under the ice in 4' of water even though water as deep as 70' exists. But a lake right next door I may fish in 30' of water and have the same success. With 360+ lakes in the County, each one seems to have it's own characteristics and intracacies....  Makes it fun and challenging to figure them out!!

Depends on the lake. I have one I fish 3' - 4' in 6 fow. Another I fish 17' - 21' in 23 fow. Other lakes are in between or even deeper. Depends a lot on water clarity, green weed growth, forage, etc.

I am envious of you guys who are finding bluegill 2 to 4' off the bottom.  It seems like all of mine are glued to the bottom until they get interested in my jig, then they will come up a foot or two.

I've found them shallow 4-10 fow close to an inlet, a shallow flat with deeper water close by (dropoff).  Most seem to be holding tight to the bottom.
It's funny how perch, if you miss a bite, they almost always come back and hit again.  With gills, they seem to shut right down if you miss a hit.  So I make sure I don't miss!

I have only had luck with sunfish this year. We fish in about 15-17 fow and when I get one and put my jig back down, they meet at 9 ft. I can watch them shoot up on the flasher. I haven't caught anything within 3 ft of the bottom. This is the first year I have had anything like this happen. Everyother year I have fished 6-12 inches off the bottom.

they certainly spook easy in that shallow, I usually swiss-cheeze the area I know is holding gills ... then when things calm down, sometimes an hour later if that's what it takes, then you can really pound them.  Nothing like poppin'em in 4 fow, as you don't even need to use your bail.

Was this out of the one pond we both know of?
