I done first ice fishing in the lake where is in famous hot spring “Zao Spa”.

I see, smelt is very popular here. Usually trout fishing season is from April to September. So we can't fish that in ice fishing season except in some areas.

There are lots of hot spring inns and hotels. Hot springs are strong acidic sulfur springs.

This lake is so small, so I carried the tools on foot.　In home lake, I carried these by snowmobile, but the lake may not freeze for record warm winter.

I will go to a distant lake on Saturday. I can't use a snowmobile, so I attach a harness and should pull my luggage like a horse. lol

Niru-san, need to make a smitty sled, so much easier to lug your gear around.

I went to Akagi Lake where is on the top of mountain about 1300m. There are two ice fishing cultures in Japan. Our one is using common shelters, other one is using snail type pop-up shelters like here.

Driving north for 4 hours I went ice fishing. For historical record warm winter we can't do ice fishing in near lake.
I find that in this lake we can do kokanee fishing all season. I'd like to try ice kokanee fishing next time.

I went ice kokanee fishing. There were no school of kokanee, and I got skunk. But I could try to new fishing way, had a fun.
I’d like to use ice fishing rods, but this time these were not reach from the US, so I used other kind rods. Those were attached to ice rod holders that I made. But there are long so balance is no good.
Next time I'll try to ice trout fishing using new ice fishing rods and holders.

I also love fishing in nature. In this lake, I can catch kokanee all year round and there is no limit on the number of rods and hooks. My favorite lake.
