I think the wind may affect fishing in open water.  I'm not sure about hard water.

Yeah barometric pressure probably plays a bigger roll in the winter

if you are fishing on ice near open water it will have an effect on the fish and possibly the ice.

I am also a believer that barometric pressure plays a bigger role on the ice. Wind out of any direction plain sucks!

Agreed! If you are inside a shanty jigging the wind is much less of an issue but trying to run tip ups on windy days is a lot like work

Have you ever noticed when jigging on a day when there is no wind, the water in your hole goes up and down?? thats not just current. Yes wind does effect ice conditions at all times. Wind blowing on hard ice, creates a ripple effect underneith the ice. You may not notice it, but the fish do.  I prefer a wind out of the west or east If Im willing to fish in windy conditions.  It affects the lake less because of our mountains.  You get a dead north wind or a dead south wind, forget it.
What?? fish are biting, I'm gone

Wind direction is often the forerunner of upcoming weather(i.e. barometric pressure) hence the old sayings which IMHO are accurate MOST of the time.
