Title: Average cost to mount a fish
Post by: The Rusty Crab on Feb 04, 2011, 08:34 AM
Anyone know the average cost to have a fish mounted?  Do they do it by the inch?  I have heard thats how it works girth x width or something along those lines.  Any help would be great!

most are like minimum $200 to get started and anywhere from $13-$20 an inch.  They do both fiberglass replicas and actualy skin mounts and prices are different for each.

Evrywhere I know of is 11-13$ an inch.  It is a different charge for the actual fish or a reproduction though, I can't remember though

Quality cost. ;D  $7 is unheard of nowadays.

I just paid $14 an inch to send out 2 fish. $400 deposit... Rest will be sent when he ships them.

They all seem to charge about the same, the quality is not and varies a lot. Most mounts I see are poorly done. Very few true artists doing this.. Lots of hacks...

He does all my fish. If you have seen the mounts at the sportmans shows from Hat Trick Charters out of Oswego he did all those mounts as well.

If he is not the best he is right there with the best...

Based on what I catch, I wouldn't have a hard time coming up with $54.

lots of guys try to deal shop when having something mounted, if you save $50 but your fish comes out poorly done is it really worth it?  I try to look at some of their work or talk to someone that has used them before to get an idea of the quality to expect.

Same here. Been out every weekend so far and nothing thats been remotely close to mount-worthy.  True this IS my first season of ice fishing in Southern Maine.

I just got an estimate on a fiberglass replica of a king salmon and it was about $11/inch.

So true. It's all in the paint job. I would recommend to anyone thinking of have a fish mounted to makes sure the real head gets used. So many fish are ruined by a artificial head. Once it's ordered and attached it's a done deal. I have seen mounts with fake heads that I would leave in the guys shop.  @)

My personal feeling is to not have a replica done, I just don't like the looks of them.

I thought, and may be 100% wrong, that all mounts have fake heads because it is difficult, if not impossible to get the oils out?
