1st Catfish | Icing River Backwaters

Last Saturday my buddy and I iced a river backwater for the first time. We have fished it in the summer months but weren't sure of all the species in there, their population, depth, structure, etc. These unknowns were the reason we decided to ice this body of water. We wound up catching a lot of fish and 5 species on the day. The highlight came when I hooked into a Channel Cat that was roaming above a school of Crappies - my first Channel through the ice.

Do you have ice yet? It's been a weird winter so far here in MN. It started in early November, some ice fishing going on here earlier than I've seen in a long time. Then we had a few warm snaps with temps in the 40's. It's kept the ice thick enough to walk on but not a lot of permanents out yet.
