1 blade vs 2 blades on augers
« on: Jan 20, 2013, 02:48 PM »
Just wondering if any one has an opinion? I have a SM with a single chipper and was wondering if I should buy a two bladed auger? Are they much faster?

Yeah, they are faster. Replacement blades are more expensive and more picky about being sharp though.

I sure wouldn't go spending money to get one over the other. I don't get in a very big hurry drilling holes though.

Chippers vs Shavers, each have their up side and down side.

My opinion is that a SHARP multi-blade auger will out drill a sharp chipper.  A dull chipper will out drill a dull multi-blade.  Chippers seem to be less affected by wear.  Just my observation owning both.

I have had both and it seems the double is faster but like skipper said I wouldn't go running out to buy a 200 dollar multiblade auger just to drill holes faster. I would stick with the auger you have unless you are thinking of selling the whole setup and upgrading.

Chippers are good for recutting holes in a permanent house

Shavers are good for new holes and there faster due to the extra knife..

I bought a new Strikemaster with a single blade after having a older Strikemaster with a double blade.  I didn't do any reading on this and thought they would be the same or at least comparable and I also thought buying one blade would be a lot nicer than two.  Was i wrong!  I felt like i had stand on my chipper blade to get it go through the ice.  I bought a lazer auger and now it cuts through the ice like butter.  Not even close in my opinion.
